However, as having at least third-party car insurance is a legal requirement to drive a car on UK roads, it cannot be avoided.<\/p><p>What you can do though is try to find ways to make your premium lower and easier to manage. One of the ways you can do that is to renew your car insurance at the ideal time. We\u2019ve done some research to find out when that might be.<\/p><h3>What is car insurance renewal and how does it work?<\/h3><p>Most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/car-insurance\">car insurance policies<\/a> offer annual cover. This means they start on the date you choose, and expire exactly a year later.<\/p><p>Lately, more insurers have started offering rolling monthly contracts, but the majority still stick to an annual renewal date.<\/p><p>This means that, on the date your policy expires, you are no longer covered and driving your car on the road becomes illegal.<\/p><p>Some car insurance providers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/car-insurance\/the-dangers-of-auto-renewing-your-car-insurance\">auto-renew your car insurance<\/a> when your policy expires, which has its pros and cons. They must tell you in advance if they are going to do this, and give you the chance to opt out. If your policy isn\u2019t set to auto-renew, you must either proactively renew your policy before it expires, take out an alternative one or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/car-insurance\/how-to-sorn-a-car\">register your car as SORN<\/a> (off the road).<\/p><h3 id=\"time\">When is the best time to renew car insurance?<\/h3><p>There is no definitive answer to this. However, most agree that renewing before the last minute can save you a lot of money.<\/p><p>Savings estimates vary, but recent studies have found that renewing your car insurance at least a couple of weeks before your existing policy expires could save you anywhere between 17% and 42%, compared with leaving it until the day it expires.<\/p><h3>How far ahead should I renew my car insurance?<\/h3><p>We did our own snapshot check of the cheapest time to renew. We used a popular price comparison site to get a quote for comprehensive cover for a 30-year old, VW Golf-driving teacher from London 4 weeks, 3 weeks, 2 weeks 1 week and a day before their existing policy expired, plus on the day of expiry.<\/p><p>We found that the \u201csweet spot\u201d for the cheapest premiums was 2-3 weeks ahead of the renewal date. After this, premiums started to creep up. They were most expensive the day our policy expired. Our fictional driver could have saved \u00a3136 (12%) by renewing at least 2 weeks in advance compared with waiting till the day of expiry.<\/p><p>A touch surprisingly, though, our (admittedly snapshot) research found that it probably wasn\u2019t worth getting quotes any earlier than 3 weeks ahead. The cheapest quote was actually marginally higher 4 weeks in advance.<\/p><h4>Cheapest quotes by time until policy expires, in our scenario<\/h4><ul><li>4 weeks in advance: \u00a3984<\/li><li>3 weeks in advance: \u00a3981<\/li><li>2 weeks in advance: \u00a3981<\/li><li>1 week in advance: \u00a31,007<\/li><li>1 day in advance: \u00a31,036<\/li><li>On the day: \u00a31,120<\/li><\/ul><p>What we definitely wouldn\u2019t recommend is to automatically renew with your existing provider. Always have a look around and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/car-insurance\">compare quotes<\/a> to see if someone else can offer you the same (or better) policy terms for a lower premium. Even if you\u2019d rather stay with your insurer, you can use this information to negotiate a better deal.<\/p><h3>How do you know when to renew your car insurance?<\/h3><p>Your insurance company will post and\/or email you a reminder that you need to renew your policy a few weeks before its expiry date.<\/p><p>If you are enrolled onto <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/car-insurance\/the-dangers-of-auto-renewing-your-car-insurance\">auto-renewal<\/a>, you will get a notice saying your policy will renew on the stated date and the new rate of your premium.<\/p><h3>What is car insurance auto-renewal?<\/h3><p>In many cases, you will be enrolled onto the insurance company\u2019s auto-renewal programme when you first take out your cover. This means your policy will continue with the same conditions as before. It won\u2019t expire on the date stated in your policy documents.<\/p><p>It\u2019s best to opt out of this or switch it off before the end of your policy term. You\u2019ll often end up paying more for your policy if it renews automatically.<\/p><p>Note that if you cancel after your policy renews, you may have to pay a cancellation fee if you then decide to change providers. So make sure you do your research early.<\/p><h3>How to renew your car insurance<\/h3><p>You can usually renew your policy by contacting your insurer directly. The methods available vary by company, but most offer a customer service phone line and email address for customer queries.<\/p><p>In an increasingly digital world, many insurance companies now offer online portals or handy phone apps, where you can manage your policy. You should be able to renew through these services.<\/p><p>That said, consider shopping around for a better deal before you renew with your existing provider. Even if you don\u2019t actually want to switch, you can use the prices you found to negotiate with your insurer.<\/p><h3>Should you renew your car insurance early?<\/h3><p>Yes, as stated above, renewing early can save you money.<\/p><p>Opinions vary on the exact date, but around 3 weeks before the policy\u2019s expiry date seems to be the best bet. If that sounds a little too early for you, anything over 8 days early can also save you some cash.<\/p><h3>How early can I renew my car insurance?<\/h3><p>Your car insurance is affected by a variety of factors. This means your insurance company might not be able to price your renewal correctly if you try to renew too far in advance. If you\u2019re happy with your existing insurer why bother? After all, as the saying goes, if it ain\u2019t broke don\u2019t fix it.<\/p><p>We say that just because something \u201cain\u2019t broke\u201d, doesn\u2019t mean it can\u2019t be improved upon. Auto-renewing with your existing provider may be the easy option (and sometimes the best option). But sticking with the same provider year on year could be costing you a pretty penny.<\/p><p>Your current insurer may have offered the best combination of price and quality of cover when you first took out its policy. But, even though insurers are no longer able to charge existing customers more than new ones for equivalent cover, that doesn\u2019t mean that a different insurer won\u2019t offer a better deal now. In fact, according to insurance price benchmarking firm Consumer Intelligence, those who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/car-insurance\">compare and switch car insurance<\/a> could save over \u00a3400.<\/p><p>We think that\u2019s worth a little bit of hassle.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/article><h3>Bottom line<\/h3><p>Timing your car insurance renewal right can make a significant difference to your premiums. It pays to get comparing a few weeks in advance. You can renew your car insurance anything up to 30 days before your existing policy expires. It\u2019s not the only way you can keep costs to a minimum, though. If you\u2019ve made no claims, didn\u2019t change your vehicle and your circumstances haven\u2019t changed, you can call up your insurer to challenge the increase.<p>They may not agree to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/how-to-reduce-the-cost-of-car-insurance\">reduce your premiums<\/a>, in which case you may want to look elsewhere for cover.<\/p><p>If you stay with the same insurer, the terms of your policy shouldn\u2019t change. If you made a claim during the previous policy term, your premium will most likely rise at renewal. This is the insurer\u2019s way of recouping its costs.<p>If you\u2019ve changed your vehicle or had a change in circumstances, this can also affect your premium. Things like the make and model of your car, its engine size, your address and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/car-insurance\/job-titles\">your job title<\/a> all affect how much you pay for your car insurance.<\/p><p>The increase can also be the result of factors completely out of your control. These could include a rise in crime rates in your area. This means your policy renews automatically with the same terms (but often a higher price) instead of expiring.<p>It\u2019s best to opt out of this and negotiate the renewal terms, or shop around for an alternative policy. So, if you can, it\u2019s best to compare deals nice and early. If you find a better deal with another provider, but are otherwise happy with your current provider, you can always use your research to haggle for a better price or extra perks.<p>There\u2019s also the risk that if you leave it until the very last minute, you might get caught up with other priorities and miss the deadline for when your existing policy expires. Sometimes life gets in the way of shopping around before your policy expires, and you renew with your existing provider to keep things simple. This doesn\u2019t always mean you\u2019ve missed out on the chance to shop around and save money.<p>By law, you have a 14 day cooling off period to cancel and get a refund after taking out car insurance. The cooling off period starts from the time you buy a policy or the time you receive your policy documents, whichever is later.<\/p><p>However, you may have a pro-rata amount deducted for any days for which you\u2019ve held the policy and you won\u2019t be able to cancel if you\u2019ve claimed within the cooling off period. The insurer also has the right to charge an admin fee. This fee should be lower than if you cancel after the cooling off period, though. Some providers don\u2019t charge a cancellation fee during the cooling off period at all.
