However, for every \u00a31 invested in Premium Bonds, you\u2019ll get one entry into a monthly prize draw. The top prize is \u00a31 million.<\/p><p>The popularity of these bonds proves that some UK savers like the idea of gambling on a large cash prize, rather than receiving a steady regular income.<\/p><p>In this guide, we\u2019ll explore some other savings vehicles that give you a chance to win a large cash prize. We\u2019ll also compare these products to more traditional savings accounts.<\/p><h3>Alternatives to Premium Bonds<\/h3><p>Here are a few direct alternatives to Premium Bonds.<\/p><h4>Halifax Savers Prize Draw<\/h4><p>Halifax offers a monthly prize draw to all customers who hold at least \u00a35,000 worth of savings. These savings must be held in Halifax or Bank of Scotland savings accounts or ISAs (but not children\u2019s savings accounts).<\/p><p>Each customer gets one free entry into the monthly draw.<\/p><p>Every month, Halifax gives away:<\/p><ul><li>3 x \u00a3100,000 prizes<\/li><li>100 x \u00a31,000 prizes<\/li><li>1,500 x \u00a3100 prizes<\/li><\/ul><p>Halifax doesn\u2019t reveal how many people enter its monthly draw, so it\u2019s not possible to compare the odds of winning with Premium Bonds.<\/p><p>However, it\u2019s worth remembering that you\u2019ll earn interest on your savings as well as your place in a monthly prize draw.<\/p><h4>Nationwide Start to Save Prize Draw<\/h4><p>Nationwide holds a prize draw for its \u201cStart To Save\u201d savings account holders, with the last draw being held in February 2024.<\/p><p>To be eligible for the draw, your account balance must have increased by between \u00a350 and \u00a3100 in each of the previous 3 months. The idea is that this encourages savers to keep adding to their accounts.<\/p><p>The prize on offer is \u00a3250. Nationwide said the odds of winning fluctuate between one in 34 and one in 67, depending on the number of entrants.<\/p><p>Account holders also earn interest on their savings, regardless of whether they win a prize.<\/p><p>Prize draws took place on 22 August 2023 and 20 February 2024.<\/p><h4>Family Building Society Windfall Bonds<\/h4><p>If you invest \u00a310,000 in a Family Building Society Windfall Bond, you\u2019ll automatically be entered into its monthly prize draw to win up to \u00a350,000.<\/p><p>The number of prizes are allocated into 5 levels: <\/p><ul><li>\u00a350,000<\/li><li>\u00a310,000<\/li><li>\u00a31,000<\/li><li>\u00a3500<\/li><li>\u00a3100<\/li><\/ul><p>The value of the monthly prize fund varies each month, in proportion with the value of Windfall Bonds entered into the previous month\u2019s prize draw. <\/p><p>It\u2019s calculated by taking the total value of deposits entered into the previous month\u2019s free prize draw, multiplied by 1% and divided by 12.<\/p><p>As an example, if there were 12,000 qualifying entries one month, the following month\u2019s number of prizes would be allocated as follows: <\/p><ul><li>1 x \u00a350,000 prize<\/li><li>2 x \u00a310,000 prizes<\/li><li>15 x \u00a31,000 prizes<\/li><li>15 x \u00a3500 prizes<\/li><li>75 x \u00a3100 prizes<\/li><\/ul><p>This equates to 108 prizes from a total prize fund worth \u00a3100,000.<\/p><p>You can find all details of the next upcoming draw, including the prize fund value and number of prizes on offer, on the Family Building Society website each month.<\/p><p>On top of that, you\u2019ll earn interest on these bonds that tracks the Bank of England base rate.<\/p><div class=\"newsletter-wrapper\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"newsletter-signup win up to \u00a35,000. <\/p><p>Each month there is:<\/p><ul><li>1 prize of \u00a35,000<\/li><li>10 prizes of \u00a350<\/li><li>10 prizes of \u00a320<\/li><\/ul><p>Every \u00a31 you hold in your account at the end of each month gives you one entry into the following month\u2019s prize draw. You can have a maximum of 200 entries a month (equal to \u00a3200 in savings). <\/p><p>You can only hold one PrizeSaver account and keep in mind that not all credit unions offer PrizerSaver accounts. <\/p><h4>Chip Prize Savings Account<\/h4><p>With the Prize Savings Account from Chip, account holders have the chance to win a prize of up to \u00a310,000, instead of earning interest on their savings. <\/p><p>The number of entries you get is decided by your average balance over the calendar month. Your average balance is calculated by your daily balance divided by the number of days in a month. The earlier you pay money into your account, the more entries you get.<\/p><p>Each month there\u2019s a chance to win:<\/p><ul><li>1 prize of \u00a310,000<\/li><li>2,500 prizes of \u00a310<\/li><li>8,000 prizes of \u00a35<\/li><\/ul><p>Other than that, the account works like any other easy access account \u2013 you can deposit funds and withdraw your cash when you want to and your savings are protected up to \u00a3120,000 under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/banking\/what-is-the-fscs\">Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS)<\/a>.<\/p><h3>Comparing traditional savings accounts to Premium Bonds<\/h3><p>Not sold on the idea of a prize draw? Here\u2019s a quick look at how other types of savings accounts compare to Premium Bonds.<\/p><h4>Savings accounts and cash ISAs<\/h4><p>You won\u2019t earn any interest on Premium Bonds.<\/p><p>The amount of money paid out in prizes per year is determined by the Annual Prize Fund Interest Rate. As of May 2025, this was 3.8%.<\/p><p>This is technically the amount that each bond pays out, taking into account the odds of winning. Premium Bond holders will be hoping to earn a lot more, but the majority of them will earn less.<\/p><p>If you prefer to earn a guaranteed amount of interest, find a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/savings-accounts\/best-savings-accounts\">good savings account<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/savings-accounts\/cash-isas\">cash ISA<\/a> that pays at least this amount.<\/p><h4>Stocks and Shares ISAs<\/h4><p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/stocks-and-shares-isas\">stocks and shares ISA<\/a> is a platform that allows you to invest in stocks and shares tax-free.<\/p><p>Stocks and shares tend to pay higher returns than cash savings in the long run. However, there is a risk that the value of your investment can go down, as well as up.<\/p><h4>Peer-to-peer lending<\/h4><p>Peer-to-peer lending websites allow you to lend money directly to borrowers. The lack of overheads needed for these websites to operate allows them to offer superior rates of return compared to most banks\u2019 savings accounts.<\/p><p>There is a slight risk of you losing your investment, should the borrower default on their loan. However, most good peer-to-peer lending websites have protections in place to compensate savers (the lenders) in this situation.<\/p><h3>Bottom line<\/h3><p>If you\u2019re looking for a different, potentially more fun way to save, opening a prize draw savings account could be the way to go. If you\u2019re lucky enough to win the jackpot, you could win several thousand pounds, which can work out to be a lot more than the amount of interest you would earn on a standard savings account.<\/p><p>But on the flipside, you need to consider the chances of actually winning this sum.
