Unless, of course, you invest it in a physical asset\u2026 such as gold, which is what Tally does for you.<\/p><p>It\u2019s an innovative way of thinking about banking, while also building on a concept that\u2019s as old as the world \u2013 that money should somehow be tied to its <em>physical<\/em> value. It\u2019s still pretty early days, but we\u2019ve taken a look at whether it could be a good idea for your finances.<\/p><h3>What is Tally?<\/h3><p>At its core, Tally is a digital bank account that works thanks to an app and its card, just like your favourite challenger bank (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/current-accounts\/monzo-review\">Monzo<\/a>? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/current-accounts\/starling-bank-review\">Starling<\/a>? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/current-accounts\/revolut-review\">Revolut<\/a>?).<\/p><p>However, the moment you transfer your pounds to your Tally account, you\u2019re actually purchasing the equivalent amount in gold. This gold actually exists and is kept in a secured vault in Switzerland (yeah, for real).<\/p><p>This means that the value of your money will fluctuate according to the price of gold and not to the value of the pound.<\/p><h3 id=\"how\">How does Tally work?<\/h3><p>Tally operates using the Tally currency, where 1 Tally = 1 milligram of gold. This is how it works:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Download the app and set up the account. <\/strong>It\u2019s a fairly quick and easy process. You\u2019ll need your ID.<\/li><li><strong>Buy Tally to fund your account.<\/strong> You can send a bank transfer in pounds to your Tally account directly from your regular bank account and it will be instantly converted.<\/li><li><strong>Use the card to make purchases or withdraw cash.<\/strong> You will receive the card within a few days after opening the account and you can use it in the UK or abroad.<\/li><\/ul><p>The gold you purchase is pure, insured and sourced from \u201cLBMA-accredited commodity brokers\u201d, which in practice means that the gold meets the ethical and purity standards set by the London Bullion Market Association, a global authority for precious metals.<\/p><p>Also, keep in mind that getting Tally practically means that you\u2019re investing your money in gold, which is a commodity. This is riskier, and more complicated, than getting a traditional bank account. More on this <a href=\"#should_you\">below<\/a>.<\/p><article class=\"luna-card luna-card--alt\"><div class=\"luna-card__block has-padding-small\"><p>All investing should be regarded as longer term. Capital at risk.<\/p><\/div><\/article><br><h3>How much does Tally cost?<\/h3><p>Tally charges a one-off \u2018account activation fee\u2019 of \u00a39 when you open an account. It also charges an account management or \u2018keeping\u2019 fee. The amount you\u2019ll be charged is 0.5% per annum, or a minimum of \u00a33 per month, calculated daily and charged each month.<\/p><p>When funds are transferred into your account, your pounds are converted to tally at the global gold wholesale price less a flat exchange fee of 1.49%. <\/p><p>Spending on your card and withdrawing cash from an ATM (both in the UK and abroad) is free. ATM withdrawals are limited to \u00a3250 a day, with a maximum of 3 withdrawals. <\/p><h3>Is Tally safe?<\/h3><p>Tally isn\u2019t a bank, and as it doesn\u2019t deal with fiat currencies, it\u2019s not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/banking\/what-is-the-fscs\">FSCS<\/a> protected. Will it make your money work harder? The answer is somewhat complicated.<\/p><p>The idea behind Tally is that fiat currencies are volatile, whereas gold, being a physical asset, is less likely to lose its value. While this is true to a degree, it is also true that gold prices (just like those of any other physical commodity, say, oil) go up and down all the time according to market trends. When you use Tally, you\u2019re <em>investing<\/em> in gold, and investing always comes with the potential for earnings but also the risk of losses.<\/p><p>You need to be very aware of this, because the fact that your money is accessible all the time thanks to the card, can make it look like this is a regular bank account \u2013 it\u2019s not. Any profit you make from selling the gold in your account will be subject to Capital Gains Tax in the UK.<\/p><p>By keeping your money in pounds, on one hand, you have the same problem: if the pound goes down, your money will be worth less from a global point of view. However, if you live in the UK, you\u2019re usually less likely to notice this impact if you don\u2019t travel or make many international purchases, because the economy of the whole country will readjust accordingly (usually, imported goods will become more expensive but exports will thrive). It\u2019s still less than ideal, but it\u2019s not as bad for you personally. If you hold your money in Tally and the price of gold goes down instead, you will bear the brunt of it.<\/p><p>Conversely, if the price of gold goes up, your money will be worth more than that of your fellow UK citizens. So, you\u2019re taking a bet. In the long run, the price of gold has been going up, but it doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t lose money, especially in the short term \u2013 as you know, \u201cpast performance is no guarantee of future results\u201d.<\/p><p>Finally, Tally is an innovative way of investing in gold, but certainly not the only one.
