We review the vast majority of credit cards available in the UK. <\/p>

Together with our experts\u2019 commentary, scores are an essential part of those reviews: they help you figure out at a glance whether or not a card is good at doing its job \u2013 and our expert analysis tells you why, what and how much.<\/p>

So, how do we come up with those scores?<\/p>

What is the Finder score?<\/h3>

Our expert team evaluates various products in our database, assigning each one a score out of 10. A higher score means the product is more competitive and may offer better value.<\/p>

If you want peace of mind, this rating will give it to you. These products offer the best value and outcomes considering various product features, terms, conditions and price.<\/p><\/div><\/div>

Well-balanced products that provide what you need, offering a healthy mix of competitive features at a good price. However, they\u2019re not quite the best in class.<\/p><\/div><\/div>

Bottom line: You can find better, but these products still offer reasonable value and have the basics sorted.<\/p><\/div><\/div>

These products may not offer much value in the long run, and there are better options available.<\/p><\/div><\/div>

Credit cards are all slightly different \u2013 there\u2019s no best credit card that works for everyone. You may need a credit card for different reasons: paying off debt, making a big purchase, travelling, earning rewards and so on. So our scoring is tailored to each card type. <\/p>

We\u2019ve excluded cards from our ratings if they\u2019re not available yet or are virtual cards only. We\u2019ve also excluded cards if there\u2019s little info available about them.<\/p>

What factors do we take into account?<\/h4>
  • Purpose.<\/strong> We score how well a card does the job it was designed to do. For example, when rating a purchase card, the purchase 0% introductory offer will be the largest contributing factor to the card\u2019s score.<\/li>
  • Costs.<\/strong> Any kind of charge you may expect from using the card is included in here, such as purchase and balance transfer rate, annual fees, cash withdrawals, late payment fees etc.<\/li>
  • Rewards.<\/strong> Some credit cards offer rewards, including airport lounge access and cashback. We know that looking for rewards won\u2019t be a high priority for most card categories so this section of our rating doesn\u2019t greatly affect the credit card\u2019s overall score, unless it\u2019s a rewards card.<\/li>
  • Extras.<\/strong> This covers any information which either doesn\u2019t fall into any of the above categories or isn\u2019t typically included in most credit cards in a particular category, but a card may have it anyway. For example, a credit building card, typically used by people with poor or no credit history, might have a 0% balance transfer period.<\/li><\/ul>

    Balance transfer credit cards<\/h4>

    You use these to pay off debt you\u2019ve accumulated, so the main factors we look at are the length of the balance transfer deal, balance transfer rate and the cost of the balance transfer fee. Other fees, rewards, the interest rate or any deals on purchases also form part of the final score.<\/p>

    0% purchase credit cards<\/h4>

    The most important aspect is the length of the 0% purchase deal, which shows how long you have until your purchase(s) start accruing interest if you haven\u2019t paid for them. . We also look at the purchase revert rate \u2013 the rate after the 0% introductory offer. And we consider other fees, such as balance transfer, and rewards.<\/p>

    \u201cAll-rounder\u201d credit cards<\/h4>

    These cards offer both a long purchase 0% deal and a balance transfer 0% deal. We consider the length of the introductory period as well as the revert rates and balance transfer fee. Again, any rewards and extras are also included in the final score.<\/p>

    Rewards credit cards<\/h4>

    Here the most important element is obviously the rewards. We consider the intro bonus, earn rate, cashback, travel perks and other rewards. Secondly, we include fees and any additional extras in our rating.<\/p>

    Credit builder credit cards<\/h4>

    When you start your journey with a credit builder credit card, you\u2019re usually offered a high interest rate and your main goal is improving your credit score. Sowe look at whether a card allows you to review your rate after a while, gives you access to your credit report or offers any other kind of credit management feature. Fees, rewards and purchase rate also form part of our scores.<\/p>

    Travel credit cards<\/h4>

    For this category, we take any travel-related perks or fees into consideration. This includes foreign transaction fees, airport lounge access and travel insurance. <\/p>

    Student credit cards<\/h4>

    The range of features we consider for rating student cards is pretty wide and covers rates and fees, whether there are any budgeting or credit management features, plus rewards or perks and fees for using the card abroad.<\/p>

    Business credit cards<\/h4>

    We score every business card on a equal basis, but for our top picks, we select cards which best suit different needs of businesses, such as cards for businesses which need to travel a lot.<\/p>

    Business charge cards<\/h4>

    We rate these similarly to the business credit card category, but only include charge cards which don\u2019t charge interest.<\/p>

    Ethical credit cards<\/h4>

    These are rated based on how ethical the provider is, including whether they are carbon-neutral, have a net-zero plan, support local communities and provide carbon footprint tracking. We categorise cards from ethical providers by card type including purchase, balance transfer and rewards cards. <\/p>

    Your reviews and our customer survey<\/h3>

    In January 2025, we ran a customer satisfaction survey on credit card providers. The survey asked 751 respondents how satisfied they are with their credit card provider on a scale from 1 to 5, and also whether they would recommend it to a friend or not.<\/p>

    You can see review stars at the top of our review pages, if we\u2019ve received more than 10. These are from consumers just like you who use our site and want to review the products and providers they use. We include ratings out of 5 and responses we\u2019ve received in our annual customer satisfaction surveys. <\/p>
