If you want to involve actual money and your child is 6 or over, you can apply for a prepaid Rooster Card (yet if you\u2019re not a NatWest customer, this does come with a subsciption fee).<\/p><p>There are quite a few kids\u2019 debit cards around, but the Rooster Card has some stand-out features. <\/p><h3>What is Rooster Money?<\/h3><p>Rooster Money is an app to manage your children\u2019s pocket money and teach them good money habits.<\/p><p>You can use the Virtual Tracker for free or opt for the prepaid card \u00a30 per month (free for NatWest customers), which also includes access to premium features like setting chores, tracking them and rewarding children when they complete them. <\/p><p>Rooster Money was bought by NatWest in late 2021, and now operates as part of the NatWest Banking Group. This means that if you hold an account with the NatWest Group you can get free Rooster Money cards for up to 3 children. <\/p><h3>How does Rooster Money work?<\/h3><ul><li><strong><a href=\"#reward-chart\">Reward chart for young children<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"#virtual-tracker\">Virtual money tracker<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"#set-goals\">Set goals<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"#set-chores\">Set chores<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"#different-pots\">Different pots<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"#prepaid-debit-rooster\">Prepaid debit card<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"#custom-designs-rooster\">Custom designs<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"#spending-controls\">Spending controls<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"#age-restricted-rooster\">Age-restricted sales<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h4 id=\"reward-chart\">Reward chart for young children<\/h4><p>This feature in the app can be used for children as young as 3, enabling you to reward them with stars whenever they demonstrate good behaviour.<\/p><h4 id=\"virtual-tracker\">Virtual money tracker<\/h4><p>While your kids are young, keep track of their virtual allowance, spending and saving through the app.<\/p><h4 id=\"set-goals\">Set goals<\/h4><p>For younger children you could establish, say, a 15-star goal. Once they reach it, you can buy them a toy of their choice or organise a trip to the zoo, for example. For older children, who save with real money, you can set up savings goals within the app and set up savings pots to help them set aside money for these goals.<\/p><h4 id=\"set-chores\">Set chores<\/h4><p>If your kids are old enough for you to give them weekly pocket money, this is a clever way of tying it to good habits and behaviour.<\/p><h4 id=\"different-pots\">Different pots<\/h4><p>As well as savings pots, you can set up \u201cspend\u201d pots for spending and \u201cgive\u201d pots for donating to charity.<\/p><h4 id=\"prepaid-debit-rooster\">Prepaid debit card<\/h4><p>Children aged 6 to 17 can have their own prepaid card for spending purposes or withdrawing cash. It\u2019s funded from the parent account. Your child can add their card to Apple Pay once they turn 13.<\/p><h4 id=\"custom-designs-rooster\">Custom designs<\/h4><p>Children can choose from a trio of free card designs, or you can pay \u00a34.99 so they can choose from one of 12 creative designs, including a football-themed card, a glittery card and a card featuring a jelly fish.<\/p><h4 id=\"spending-controls\">Spending controls<\/h4><p>You can decide whether your children can use their card to spend online, in person, to withdraw cash from ATMs or all of the above. You can also set dedicated spending limits.<\/p><h4 id=\"age-restricted-rooster\">Age-restricted sales<\/h4><p>Your child\u2019s card can\u2019t be used in places like off-licences, pubs and betting shops.<\/p><h4>The Rooster card<\/h4><p>This is the bit of Rooster Money that more closely resembles a bank account (which is why it\u2019s only available to children who are aged 6-17). It comes with the following features:<\/p><ul><li><strong>A parent account and app for you.<\/strong> Complete with account number and sort code, dashboard on the app and notifications.<\/li><li><strong>A prepaid card and app for your kid.<\/strong> The account is funded from the parent account.<\/li><li><strong>Spending control features.<\/strong> You can decide whether the kids can use the card to spend online, in person, to withdraw cash from ATMs or all of the above. You can also set dedicated spending limits.<\/li><\/ul><p>If you\u2019re child is 13 or over, they can also add the card to their Apple Pay. <\/p><p>The card is linked to the app, so children will be able to see their available balance in the app\u2019s \u201cspending pot\u201d. And you\u2019ll be able to see where their money\u2019s being spent too. <\/p><p>The Rooster Card is issued by National Westminster Bank Plc in accordance with a licence from Visa Europe. There are no overdraft options, so your children can\u2019t go into debt, and you\u2019ll be able to see every transaction they make directly on the app.<\/p><p>Attempted transactions at merchants that sell products for over-18s (such as bars and gambling sites) will be blocked.
