{"id":194048,"date":"2019-05-09T14:02:37","date_gmt":"2019-05-09T13:02:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/?p=194048"},"modified":"2025-02-27T23:15:50","modified_gmt":"2025-02-27T23:15:50","slug":"press-release-brits-spend-an-estimated-19-billion-a-year-on-convenience-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/media\/press-release-brits-spend-an-estimated-19-billion-a-year-on-convenience-services","title":{"rendered":"Brits spend an estimated \u00a319 billion a year on convenience services"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul><li>1 in 5 Brits (20%) admit to regularly spending on services like takeaway food and car services<\/li><li>Food delivery is the most popular convenience, where Brits pay out an average of \u00a332 each month, equating to \u00a36 billion a year to get food to our doors<\/li><li>A third of generation Z (33%) regularly indulge on convenience services, compared to just 1 in 10 baby boomers (10%)<\/li><\/ul><p><b>8th May, 2019, LONDON \u2013<\/b><\/p><p>Brits spend around \u00a319 billion a year on services that make life a little easier, according to a new survey conducted by price comparison site, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\">finder.com<\/a>.<\/p><p>1 in 5 of us (20%) admit to regularly spending money on time-saving services like food delivery, pet care, subscription boxes, car services and handi-work.<\/p><p>Takeaway food tops the convenience service stakes with a third (34%) of Brits spending an average of \u00a332 per month on the likes of Deliveroo, UberEats and Just Eat. That&#8217;s over \u00a3570 million per month and some \u00a36 billion a year to get food to our doors.<\/p><p>The second highest convenience is car services like Uber, with almost a fifth of Brits (18%) spending an average of \u00a329.87 each per month. Meanwhile, 16% use a handi-service, such as a gardener or a cleaner, which equates to a monthly average of \u00a336.46 per person.<\/p><p>The results also found that 14% of Brits cough up \u00a327.78 a month on subscription boxes like Graze, Hello Fresh and Gousto, while the same percentage of pet lovers spend \u00a330.96 on pet services such as walkers and groomers.<\/p><p>The research found millennials and generation Z (aged 24 and below) are most likely to indulge in convenience. A third of generation Z (33%) and 30% of millennials use such services, compared to just 7% of the silent generation and 1 in 10 baby boomers (10%).<\/p><p>However, while millennials and generation Z are the most likely to use these services, they generally spend less than older generations. The average monthly spend for these age groups is \u00a321 and \u00a326 respectively, while those from generation X and baby boomers who use convenience services both spend an average of \u00a333.<\/p><p>Unsurprisingly, the largest gap between generations comes in the food category, with 63% of generation Z calling in help when it comes to food preparation and eating, spending \u00a325 on average each month for takeaways, versus only 8% of the silent generation who spend roughly \u00a323.<\/p><p>The data also found that men are more likely than women to use convenience services, with 22% spending a monthly average of \u00a335 on food delivery, \u00a333 on car services like Uber and \u00a330 on subscription boxes.<\/p><p>This is compared with 17% of women who are prepared to spend part of their monthly wage on conveniences like pet care (\u00a332) and handi-work services (\u00a342).<\/p><p>Londoners partake in convenience services more than any other region, with 3 in 10 (29%) of the capital&#8217;s population spending an average of \u00a334 per month. Whereas, East Anglia is the region to rely least on the likes of Uber and Just Eat, with 14% of the population spending roughly \u00a329.63 a month.<\/p><p>But, it&#8217;s not all bad. Overall, our convenience spending came significantly lower than that of our friends across the pond, who spend a whopping $177 billion a year (\u00a3136 billion) to make everyday life a little bit easier.<\/p><p>Like us Brits, food delivery is the biggest convenience, with roughly 45% of Americans paying $63 each month on the likes of Seamless, UberEats, Grubhub, DoorDash, Caviar and Eat24. That&#8217;s the equivalent of \u00a348 a month and \u00a316 more than us Brits are willing to part with.<\/p><p>Commenting on the findings, Jon Ostler, CEO (UK) at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\">finder.com<\/a> said: <i>&#8220;The modern world offers amazing conveniences that weren&#8217;t possible a few years ago, but they can come at a cost if you overindulge. When deciding to get a takeaway or an Uber, taking a look at the discount codes and promotions on offer can be a quick and easy way to save you money.&#8221;<\/i><\/p><p><b>Methodology<\/b><\/p><ul><li>Finder.com commissioned Onepoll to carry out a nationally representative survey of adults aged 18+.<\/li><li>A total of 2,000 people were questioned throughout Great Britain, with representative quotas for gender, age and region.<\/li><\/ul><p><b>###<\/b><\/p><p><b>About <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\">finder.com\/uk<\/a><\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\">finder.com<\/a> is a personal finance website, which helps consumers compare products online so they can make better-informed decisions.
