An important thing to keep in mind is that the police have the authority to stop a vehicle for any reason and if they ask you to stop, you must. Failure to do so can lead to you being charged for breaking the law.<\/p><p>Among the things police are allowed to do during a stop include:<\/p><ul><li>Ask to see your driving licence, insurance certificate or MOT certificate<\/li><li>Ask you to take an on-the-spot breath test<\/li><li>Give you a fixed penalty notice for minor traffic offences such as not wearing a seat belt or using a mobile phone while driving<\/li><li>Give you a &#8220;vehicle defect rectification&#8221; notice if you have a broken light<\/li><\/ul><h4 id=\"police\">When can police search my vehicle?<\/h4><p>A police officer can stop and search a vehicle, for example if he or she suspects that it contains stolen property or drugs.
