What is Noelle About?

This holiday comedy centres on the daughter of the infamous Santa Claus, Noelle, who is full of holiday cheer. She envies her brother Nick, as he is set to take over from their dad and become Santa. But when Nick crumbles under the pressure and goes missing, Noelle has to do everything she can to find her brother and bring him back in time to fulfil his Christmas duties.

Who stars in Noelle?

Anna Kendrick plays the titular character. You might know her from the Pitch Perfect franchise, A Simple Favour, Up in the Air or Into the Woods, among others. Meanwhile, her brother Nick is portrayed by Bill Hader. He stars in HBO’s Barry and had roles in movies like It Chapter Two, Toy Story 4 and Ralph Breaks the Internet.

The cast also includes Shirley MacLaine, Billy Eichner, Julie Hagerty and Ron Funches.

Noelle review: Is it any good?

If you’re a Grinch who likes to boycott Christmas, you should probably stay away from this. Otherwise, Anna Kendrick has a pretty good track record when it comes to the roles she picks, so we’re expecting Noelle to be a feel-good, breezy holiday movie the entire family can enjoy.

That being said, as of March 2020, Noelle has a 53% score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is far from ideal, with one critic going as far as calling it a “B-film that wasn’t good enough for theatrical release”.

But here’s the deal: critics tend to rate light, fluffy movies – like holiday flicks – pretty low, so we’re ready to give Noelle the benefit of the doubt. Kendrick is charming enough to keep fans glued to the screen, while the plot itself sounds intriguing, boasting some feminist undertones that might be a nice change of pace in the holiday movie landscape. Plus, the film was written and directed by Marc Lawrence, also responsible for titles like Miss Congeniality, Two Weeks Notice and Music and Lyrics.

All in all, Noelle might not be Oscar-worthy, but it looks like a lot of fun. And there’s no reason why you shouldn’t give it a try and see if it can get you in the mood for the holidays.

Disney+ details

Streaming service Disney+ has been officially available in the US, Canada and Netherlands since 12 November. Disney+ will offer a vast library of content and release new titles that will be exclusive to the platform.

Interestingly Disney underestimated how popular the launch would be. With 10 million subscribers on day one, reports surfaced citing multiple issues when Disney+ went live. With Disney+ not coming until 24 March hopefully day one will go smoother.

Until then, familiarise yourself with the new streamer’s titles. Disney+ is set to have projects from Pixar, Lucasfilm, National Geographic, 20th Century Fox and Marvel. That makes it a pretty appealing destination for family-friendly content, whether you’re looking to finally stream Avengers: Endgame, check out new Star Wars series The Mandalorian or re-watch Finding Nemo or Parent Trap with your kids.

As expected, some titles could be withheld from the UK at launch because of previous agreements with other content providers. Still, thanks to the vast content library, we’re sure there will be plenty to keep subscribers coming back for more. The platform will cost £5.99 a month.
