Fans of the popular Artemis Fowl novels penned by Eoin Colfer have been patiently waiting to see an adaptation for a couple of decades. The movie spent years in development hell before Disney eventually acquired the rights in 2013.
Now, the entertainment giant is releasing the movie on streaming, to viewers’ delight. Will this be the next Harry Potter? Only time will tell.
Artemis Fowl was originally scheduled for a theatrical release, but that was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, the movie was released 12 June 2020 on streaming service Disney+.
The movie follows Artemis, a 12-year-old criminal mastermind. With help from his loyal protector Butler, he sets out to rescue his father, who has mysteriously disappeared.
In the process, Artemis uncovers the hidden world of fairies. As a result, he comes up with a dangerous plan that puts him at war with the powerful creatures.
Artemis is portrayed by newcomer Ferdia Shaw. The movie stars Colin Farrell as Artemis’s father, Josh Gad as dwarf Mulch Diggins, Lara McDonnell as 80-year-old elven reconnaissance officer Holly and Judi Dench as Holly’s commanding officer. The cast also includes Tamara Smart, Nonso Anozie and Hong Chau, to only name a few.
Disney+ once offered a 7-day free trial for new users, but that’s no longer the case with the company pulling the offer shortly before the release of Hamilton. You’ll now need to sign up to the platform.so you can give the platform a spin and decide if it’s a good fit for you. In other words, you can sign up for the trial and stream Artemis Fowl completely free of charge.
Streaming platform Disney+ comes with a generous content library of both TV shows and movies. It includes titles not only from Disney itself, but also subsidiaries Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar and National Geographic.
