What to look for in a red wine

When shopping for the perfect bottle of red wine to pair with your evening meal, consider our tips:

  1. Personal preference. We don’t all love all types of wine. So if you’ve got a go-to flavour, yes, that includes the fruity wines, then look for wines with ingredients that you like.
  2. Pairing wine with food. If you’re hosting a dinner party, you won’t want to choose the wrong accompaniment for the course. Below you’ll find a brief outline of how to pair food with the right wine.
  3. Wine with legs. This is something we often hear wine connoisseurs referencing. This actually refers to the streaks on the side of the glass after its contents have been swirled. Generally, the more streaks the higher the alcohol content.
  4. Full-bodied wine. A wine is referred to as being “full-bodied” when the alcohol content percentage is higher than the average (11.6%)
  5. 20-point scoring system. This is a point scoring system used by UK wine experts including Jancis Robinson and Decanter Magazine.

    Pairing wine with food

This can be extremely difficult when you’re catering to a group of friends with varying tastes and preferences. If you want to know exactly how to pair the perfect wine with the food you’re serving, then this table should prove handy.

    FoodWine
Hors d’oeuvres, or appetisersRed wines can be a bit heavy to start off an evening meal, but medium-bodied reds such as merlot can be an exception to the rule.
FishSome people say that you shouldn’t drink red wine with fish, but a glass of Pinot Noir will help add another layer to the meal, particularly when paired with salmon and trout.
Steak, pork and lambMalbec is a great choice for dark meats as it will help to bring out the richness of texture and taste.
Rich red meatTannic Reds like Cabernet Sauvignon – the rich flavouring will compliment the meal.
Earthy foods, like mushrooms or gameEarthy Reds like Pinot Noir – earthy ingredients in a meal call for an earthy accompaniment.
DessertsLighter Wine – desserts are often sweet, so you’ll want to pair this course with a flavour that’s much more subtle, so as to not bombard the taste buds. Look out for red wines that have a slight sweetness to them.

    Wine point-scoring system

This point system scores wine based on expert opinions. In the UK, the 20-point system is widely used to determine the quality of the wine by a panel of professionals.
