UK shoppers splash their Black Friday cash online
High street is quiet as consumers search for bargains online.
The high street was relatively quiet for Black Friday sales this morning as shoppers turned to the internet to hunt out bargains.
Consumers are expected to spend more than £2.5bn today as the UK continues its love affair with the US-inspired discount day.
A total of £7.3bn is expected to be spent between Friday morning and Monday night according to the Centre for Retail Research and the Vouchercodes website.
The Guardian reports that according to ShopperTrak a fifth more people are expected to hit the high street than on a normal Friday – but the hysteria of previous years is likely to be avoided as more customers shop online.
More stores have joined the event this year, but experts say bargains could be harder to find as stores fight rising costs and inflation.
Experts advise customers to research the items they want to buy rather than plunging in. Just because a retailer offers 60% off its own price doesn’t mean you can’t find the item more cheaply elsewhere.
Be wary of “too good to be true” prices – carefully check terms and conditions and buyer reviews – for sites you’ve not used before.
