TreeCard review: A prepaid card provider that helps with reforestation

Discover how the TreeCard works and whether it's worth getting one.

TreeCard is a prepaid debit card provider that prides itself on being an ethical business. Some 80% of profits from its interchange fees go towards reforestation and environmental investments.

How TreeCard works

All debit cards make money through interchange fees, charged to the retailers. TreeCard donates 80% of these fees towards the planting of new trees.

With this card, consumers who are interested in helping the environment can do so at no cost to them.

How Treecard works

All debit cards make money through interchange fees, charged to the retailers. Where TreeCard differs is that it donates 80% of these fees towards the planting of new trees.
TreeCard works in partnership with Ecosia, a not-for-profit search engine. Over the past 10 years, Ecosia has planted more than 120 million trees all over the world.
Each TreeCard is made from sustainably sourced cherry wood and more than 300,000 cards can be made from a single tree. By applying for this card, consumers who are interested in helping the environment can do so at no cost to them.
After you successfully apply for a TreeCard, you’ll be sent your debit card in the post. It can be used with any retailer that accepts Mastercard and managed using the TreeCard app.

How the app works

TreeCard can be used alongside your usual bank account, so you don’t need to switch banks. You simply link your existing accounts to the TreeCard app.
The TreeCard app includes budgeting software to help you manage your money and allows you to split bills with friends. You can also use it to track your impact on the environment with a live count of how many trees you’ve planted with your everyday card payments.

How to sign up

TreeCard is launching in summer 2021, but you can join the waiting list via the TreeCard website to be among the first to receive a card when it is released.

Click the “Join the waitlist” button at the top right of the website and add your phone number. You’ll then be sent the app to download.
