ETA travel insurance review
Find out if any of ETA's travel insurance policies are the right fit for your trip.
Whether you’re taking a gap year to see the world or taking the family for a beach holiday, it’s vital you have the right travel insurance for your trip.
If you don’t have the right protection you might be left severely out of pocket. Thankfully we’ve reviewed all of ETA’s different travel insurance policies, so you can work out which one is right for you.
To get the best deal, you’ll need to compare ETA with all the different insurers out there.
Who is ETA?
The Environmental Transport Association, also known as ETA, was set up back in 1990 as a “green breakdown service”.
It has since massively expanded into now having a charitable branch as well as offering travel insurance. It boasts the title of being the Good Shopping Guide‘s most ethical insurer.
What are my cover options with ETA
First things first, you’ll have to choose your main travel insurance policy which will either be a single-trip or annual.
Once you’ve got this sorted, you then decide whether you want to cover others or just yourself. You could well want a family policy. Plus you’ll have to pay more to get insured for countries outside of Europe.
After your main insurance package is arranged, you can then take out additional cover such as for winter sports or golf. Below we look at what ETA’s various policies will offer you.
Whether you’re going on a family holiday or skiing with friends, if you’re only doing one holiday this year then you’ll want this policy. ETA’s single trip policy features include:
- Age limit of 74 for travelling within Europe and age limit of 69 for anywhere else in the world.
- Cover for up to 31 days abroad.
- Up to £10 million cover for medical expenses should you fall ill or suffer an injury abroad.
- Geographical restrictions apply, so you’ll have to pay more to go further afield.
- Emergency medical helpline can be reached from anywhere in the world.
Maybe you’re doing a Christmas and summer holiday this year? A multi-trip deal could well save you time and money by covering each of your trips on the one policy. With ETA the policy will look like this:
- Won’t cover anyone over the age of 74 travelling within Europe, nor will it protect anyone aged over 69 travelling outside of Europe.
- Cover for up to 45 days abroad.
- Up to £10 million cover for medical expenses if you are taken ill or hurt yourself while away.
- Geographical restrictions apply, so you’ll have to pay more to go to regions outside of Europe.
- Ring the emergency medical helpline from anywhere in the world.
While you will be covered for the basics with a standard insurance policy, most insurers will require you to take out additional insurance to cover your golf gear and other potential golfing mishaps. ETA’s policy features include:
- Cover for all your golf gear should it go missing during the flight or get stolen.
- Hole-in-one bar bill will be covered for up to £100.
- Protected for pre-paid fees if you can’t play due to an injury, illness or adverse weather.
Heading on a luxury cruise? Taking out cruise ship cover on top of your main policy will make sure you can weather the stormiest seas. Here we look at exactly what ETA’s cruise policy will give you:
- Cover if you miss your departure due to unforeseen circumstances, such as the public transport you are taking breaking down.
- Should you fall ill and need treatment on land, cruise interruption cover will pay for your travel to rejoin the cruise.
- Compensation if you are confined to your cabin due to illness.
- Cover if there is an itinerary change.
Skiing and other winter sports obviously come with greater risks than a chill by the pool type of holiday. That’s why most insurers will require you to add on winter sports cover if you want to be protected on the slopes. Key features of ETA’s winter sports policy include:
- Cover if your ski equipment is lost, stolen or damaged.
- Will help you hire equipment if your gear is lost, damaged or stolen too.
- Compensation if you can’t use ski passes or other pre-paid costs due to theft, illness or injury.
- Protection for piste closure due to lack of snow.
Having a pre-existing health condition shouldn’t stop you from living life the way you want to. ETA and many other insurers could well cover you. However, you have to do a medical screening. If they do offer you a policy, here are some important features:
- Will cover you for hospital treatment.
- 24/7 emergency medical helpline.
- Repatriation will get you home for treatment.
- Cover for any children under the age of 18, or under 21 if in full-time education.
- Kids are protected for free, so no additional premium.
- Protection if child is going on holiday with a different family.
What level of cover can I get?
Rather than having tiers of Gold, Silver and Bronze, ETA has just one basic layer of protection. Here’s what you’ll get with it:

How much is my excess?
When you make a claim you often have to contribute a certain amount before the insurer starts paying out. This is known as an excess.
Say your wristwatch that’s worth £200 is stolen and the excess is £100. You will pay the first £100 and the insurer will pay the other £100 to cover the cost of replacing it.
The amount of your excess will depend on the claim you are making. Certain claims will have higher excess amounts, so check your policy documents for full details.
What’s the claims process for ETA?
If it’s a medical emergency that has left you in hospital or needing to change your travel plans, call +44 1133 180 197 immediately. Should you need to make a claim then dial +44 1133 180 124. You will need:
- Your ETA policy number.
- The name of the hospital and doctor treating you.
- It might sound odd, but you’ll need to provide the number you’re calling from too.
Should your claim not be a medical emergency, such as your bag being stolen, then call Direct Group on 0344 412 4296. You will then:
- Discuss your claim with an assessor.
- Be sent a claim form and a list of required supporting documentation.
- You complete this as soon as possible and send it back to the below address.
