Starling business customers get Bills Manager free

Starling’s 460,000 business account holders can now make payments from their Savings Spaces.

Starling Bank is introducing its free Bills Manager feature to small businesses, giving them the ability to have a direct debit or standing order taken from money set aside in any of their Savings Spaces rather than their main account balance.

When business and sole trader account holders use this feature and a payment is due, the money required to make the payment will be taken from the selected Space.

The free Bills Manager feature already exists for personal account holders, having been introduced by the digital challenger bank in October 2021.

Easier forecasting

Starling said that the tool will make forecasting budgets and managing business running costs much easier and more streamlined for its 460,000 business account holders.

Payments made via Bills Manager will automatically sync with external accounting software Xero and FreeAgent, if business owners have already connected their Starling account to these packages.

The payments will also be fed through to Starling’s own Business Toolkit – a bookkeeping tool costing £7 a month – where customers can can keep track of their incomings, outgoings and VAT all in one place.

How to get Bills Manager

To get started with Bills Manager, business account holders can go to their Savings Space, tap “Manage Space”, then “Pay bills from this Space”. They can then choose which direct debits or standing orders they would like to pay from each Space.

Customers receive a notification when their bills have been paid and can view the transactions by going into the Space and clicking “View transaction history”. If there are insufficient funds in their Bills Manager Space to make a scheduled payment, Starling will send the customer a notification the day before payment is due, and on the payment due date itself. Customers are also alerted in the same way when a direct debit is due for payment.

Helen Bierton, chief banking officer at Starling, said: “Our small business customers requested this feature, so we’ve delivered. Uptake of Bills Manager has been strong among our personal current account customers and we’re confident it will help hundreds of thousands of small businesses better manage their money too.”
