Apps like Xoom

PayPal's native international transfers facility Xoom was released to UK PayPal users in 2019, but if you don't want to send your money via PayPal, or you want to send amounts/currencies that Xoom can't support, here are some alternative money transfer apps.

The platforms we’ve listed can all offer competitive (read “bank-beating”) rates and fees for sending money across borders. The different apps support different sets of currencies – we’ve called some out and you can check our reviews or the brands’ sites themselves to see if the specific transfer you’re after is supported.

A closer look at these services

TorFX logo

1. TorFX

TorFX (visit site) is a broker, so it scours popular forex providers to find the best rate it can for your transfer. That means that while Xoom supports transfers to 88 currencies, TorFX can tap into the currency support and distribution network of a whole range of transfer services. Both apps let you pay by debit card or bank transfer but Xoom additionally supports credit card payment. With Xoom your recipient can pick up cash, so no bank account is needed, but that facility's not available through TorFX. Like Xoom, TorFX has an app you can use to arrange and track your international transfers or to set up recurring payments. TorFX also offers "forward contracts" (locking in a rate today for a transfer in the future) and "limit orders" (setting a target exchange rate at which your transfer is triggered).

Transfers to a bank account take a similar amount of time with TorFX or Xoom but the transfer speed will depend on the country you're sending to.

TorFX is running a special offer – Rate improver guarantee: TorFX will match and beat any rate you're offered by a competitor. T&Cs apply. Get a £50 Amazon voucher for each friend you refer who transfers £5,000 or more. T&Cs apply.
