Sites like Provident

Founded way back in 1880, Provident was one of the longest standing providers of short term doorstep loans. However, there are now a number of similar lenders operating online (rather than coming to your house). Here's a list of UK lenders offering similar loans.

Provident ceased trading in December 2021, however you can compare alternative lenders.

A feature that set Provident apart from its short term lending peers (aside from being founded in 1880), was that approvals and repayments were conducted through a home visit. That can be a real benefit to some borrowers, but if it’s not important to you (or even if you’d rather avoid that), then you might be equally at home (no pun intended) with one of the online only providers listed below.

Our tool at the end of this page, allows you to compare the cost of payday or short term loans from multiple lenders.

Warning: Late repayment can cause you serious money problems. For help, go to moneyhelper.org.uk.

Please note: High-cost short-term credit is unsuitable for sustained borrowing over long periods and would be expensive as a means of longer-term borrowing.
