Well known for its cash pickup services, MoneyGram offers international money transfers as a convenient way to send money abroad from the UK. In this guide to MoneyGram fees, we’ll see how it compares with other providers.

MoneyGram international money transfer fees

MoneyGram‘s fees and exchange rates may vary between online and agent locations, but for online transfers we can offer some insights.

When we checked online on 11 March 2021, it was free to send money from the UK to an overseas bank account, if this was available as an option. For cash pickup it was £1.99 to send £100 or less and £3.99 to send anything over that amount.

Payment option£1,000£250£100
Debit / credit card to bank (if available*)£0£0£0
Debit / credit card to cash pickup£3.99£3.99£1.99

* Transfers to bank accounts aren’t available in countries including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, Nigeria and the US.

How can I avoid paying MoneyGram fees?

Test a few different payment methods and amounts for your transfer to see if you can save money. For instance, sending money straight to the recipient’s bank is usually free. As we’ve mentioned above, though, transfers to banks aren’t available in some countries, only cash pickup.

Also bear in mind that there’s a hidden fee, in the form of a margin that MoneyGram adds on top of the mid-market exchange rate. The size of this margin varies depending on the currency you want to transfer.

For example, if you want to send money to New Zealand from the UK, MoneyGram adds a margin of 3.1%:

  • Mid-market rate: 1 GBP = 1.93 NZD
  • MoneyGram rate: 1 GBP = 1.87 NZD

While to send money to Germany, MoneyGram adds a margin of 2.5%:

  • Mid-market rate: 1 GBP = 1.17 EUR
  • MoneyGram rate: 1 GBP = 1.14 EUR

How safe is MoneyGram for international money transfers?

How much can I send with MoneyGram from the UK?

When sending online with MoneyGram, your transfer is limited to £7,600 per transaction. The monthly sending limit is also £7,600. If you need to send more than that, though, you can do so in-person from a MoneyGram agent location.

How much it will cost me to send 900 pounds to Macedonia?

      Hi Sasho,

Thanks for your inquiry. Please be advised that when you transfer or send money to a different currency, the current exchange rate applies. So, I could not provide you exactly how much the amount to be received in pounds using MoneyGram.

When you send 900 pounds from the UK to Macedonia, the amount received in Macedonia as of today is 948.99 Euros. Note that cash pick up is the only method of receiving payment in Macedonia via MoneyGram therefore, the cost is 46 Euros. The total cost with transfer fee is 946 GBP.

      Hope this helps!

      Best,
      Nikki

      Hi Sue,

      Thanks for your inquiry.

While we’re unable to give a specific option on sending the cash to your daughters UK bank account, you may check this page and look for the topic “Options for sending money to the UK from the US” to see different methods in sending cash in UK.

      I hope this helps.

      Kind regards,

Will money be taken out of my bank account if a transfer fee is not paid?

      AvatarFinder
      JoshuaDecember 17, 2018Finder

      Hi Alvin,

Thanks for getting in touch with finder. I hope all is well with you. :)

The answer to your question is it depends. If you use your bank account to pay for the transfer fee, then it will be taken out of your bank account. The fee would be deducted from your nominated account.

I hope this helps. Should you have further questions, please don’t hesitate to reach us out again.

      Have a wonderful day!

      Cheers,
      Joshua
