British Gas landlord insurance

Landlord insurance could protect you if something goes wrong with your rental property. It’s not mandatory to have this type of cover but it could offer you peace of mind that you won’t be out of pocket if the unexpected happens.

British Gas’ landlord insurance can cover up to 10 properties on one policy, which includes cover against floods, fire damage and burst pipes as standard. If you need more, there are optional extras to enhance a policy such as up to £50,000 contents cover, employer’s liability and loss of rental income. What’s more, existing customers could qualify for two months free on their insurance by getting a quote in 2019 and using a specific discount code. Here’s what else we think you should know.

Who is British Gas?

British Gas is one of the largest energy suppliers in the UK. In one form or another, it has been operating since 1812. British Gas offers home services such as installing and maintaining central heating and gas appliances. As well as offering home insurance, it also offers landlord insurance.

British Gas is a trading name of British Gas Services Ltd.

What is covered under my policy?

British Gas’ landlord insurance includes:

  • Property owners’ liability up to £10 million

For a full list of policy features, you’ll need to contact British Gas directly otherwise check your policy details carefully to ensure you have the right cover for your needs.

Optional extras

British Gas offers a range of additional protection to bolt onto your policy, including:

  • Contents insurance. Cover up to £50,000 for kitchen appliances, furniture and fittings.
  • Accidental damage. Protection against unexpected mishaps.
  • Rental income insurance. Cover for any loss of rental income while repairs are being made for up to 36 months.
  • Employer’s liability. Cover for your employees in case of injury claims.

What is my excess?

Your insurance excess is the amount of money you will need to pay towards a claim. Your insurer won’t pay out for a claim that costs less than this amount.

You’ll find details about any excesses in your policy document.

How much is this going to cost me?

There are a number of factors that can affect the cost of your British Gas landlord insurance premium, including:

  • Your sum insured. The greater the amount you wish to insure your property or contents for, the more you can expect to pay for cover.
  • Your property. The age of your property and the materials from which it is constructed can influence its ability to withstand damage.
  • Where your property is located. Certain risks, for example storm and theft, are more prevalent in certain areas, and insurers will take this into consideration when calculating your premiums.
  • Security. Security measures such as an alarm system and deadbolts can act as a deterrent to thieves and therefore reduce the cost of your cover.

What is the claims process for British Gas?

There are no claims details on the British Gas website so it’s important that you refer to your policy document and follow instructions there for making a claim.

Depending on the nature of your claim, you will need to provide the following information:

  • Your policy details and personal contact details.
  • The date of the incident.
  • Details such as the cause of the incident.
  • The value of any lost or damaged items being claimed for.
  • Names and addresses of any other people involved or responsible for the incident, including details of injuries.

It’s vital that you let your insurer know about an incident as soon as possible. Failure to do this could result in a rejected claim later on.
