Earth Day 2021: Sustainable fashion styles

At a time when doing our bit for the environment can make all the difference, buying sustainable clothing is already a step in the right direction. So step forward and into the world of eco-friendly (but still budget-friendly) fashion.

You’ve been scrolling Instagram and see another infographic about why fashion isn’t sustainable, so you close the online shopping tabs and start wondering how you can update your wardrobe without harming the environment.

Buying your outfits from charity shops or sites such as Depop is one great way to make eco-friendly fashion choices, but it’s not the only way. With more and more brands being conscious about their carbon footprint, you no longer have to choose between being fashion-conscious and environmentally-conscious – you can be both. That’s right, more of the looks, less of the guilt.

Many eco-friendly pieces are designed with style in mind, meaning timeless looks that will keep the compliments coming, no matter what the trend of the season is.

A lot of eco-friendly fashion brands have a larger price tag, but more recently cheaper, fast fashion brands have started improving their sustainability too. Even fast fashion powerhouse boohoo has just released a line of clothes made from recycled materials.

We browsed through some of our fave fashion retailers and pulled out the stars of their sustainable ranges.

What can I do to make my wardrobe more eco-friendly?

We’re glad you asked (both us and Mother Nature). Here are a few ways to get started:

  1. Donate your unwanted clothes: Maybe you’ve outgrown your favourite dress or maybe you just want to switch up your style. Either way, donating your loved pieces is a great way to give back to others and to the planet.
  2. Invest in timeless pieces: Rather than splurging on whatever the style of the season is, why not invest in some clothing pieces that will look flattering in 10 years from now? Less waste, more taste.
  3. Shop second-hand: Sites like Depop and Vinted are a great place to start browsing through previously loved clothes. You can even pop by your local charity shop. Giving old clothes a new lease of life is a sure-fire way to be kind to both your bank and Mother Nature.
  4. Buy eco-friendly washing detergents: There are more and more washing detergent brands making sure their ingredients are leaving less of a carbon footprint, so by investing in an environmentally-friendly detergent, you’ll be also investing in Earth.
  5. Wash your clothes at a lower temperature: Many washing detergents can now guarantee effective cleaning even at 30 degrees, so no need to waste all of that hot water for nothing! Plus, lower temperatures are kinder to delicate items of clothing. Win-win!
  6. Shop with sustainable retailers: Last of all, when you do feel like jazzing up your style and treating yourself to something new, make sure it’s from an eco-friendly and sustainable brand. Et voilà!
