What’s different about a Shark handheld vacuum cleaner?

Shark makes a number of reliable handheld vacuums. The Wandvacs are small and very easy to store. The Wandvac WV200 is the original, the WV251 comes with an extra battery and the WV270 has a boost mode for extra power on those stubborn messes. The CH950UKT is bigger and designed for cleaning pet hair.

What are Shark handhelds good at?

The Wandvacs are best at cleaning small debris and scooting around furniture and hard-to-reach places due to their small size. They are easy to store and very lightweight. They are also excellent crevice cleaners and have relatively short charge times on their dedicated docks. The Wandvac WV251 has an extra battery and runs for 16 minutes in total, while the newer WV270UK runs for 15 minutes on 1 battery.
The CH950UKT is great for picking up pet hair and for cleaning larger debris on all surfaces due to its greater dust capacity. It’s cheaper than the Wandvacs, but it performs really well.

All the Sharks have excellent suction.

The Shark range

For the time being, there are only 4 models available: the original Wandvac WV200UK; the dual-battery WV251UK; the WV270UK, which has a boost mode for stronger suction; and the CH950UKT. As well as handhelds, Shark offers cordless, cylinder and uprights vacs. It also sells steam mops, air purifiers and hair dryers.

How long does a Shark handheld vacuum cleaner last?

If you maintain them well, they should last you a few years. This is provided you clean the filter regularly, don’t deliberately clog the device with rocks or sharp objects and don’t use them to pick up liquids. They come with a 2-year warranty. Shark will supply replacement batteries in case the original ones go AWOL.

Shark customer reviews

Shark was awarded best value for money brand in our Retail Awards 2022.

In the floorcare category of our Retail Awards we surveyed customers about their Shark corded, cordless, handheld and stick vacuums.

Shark almost stole the show in the awards, coming a close 2nd to Miele. Customers were pleased with its products’ suction, durability and general performance on different surfaces. Most were satisfied at how well they picked up pet hair, although the anti-hair wrap technology wasn’t foolproof.

On Amazon, Shark vacs do get some flak for their short battery life and the suction of the Wandvacs on carpet is dubious. The Wandvacs are also criticised for being too expensive for their ability.

Pros and cons of Shark handhelds

Pros

  • Reliable
  • Good suction
  • Simple-to-use attachments
  • Replacement batteries
  • Great crevice cleaners
  • Easy to empty

Cons

  • Short battery life
  • Wandvacs have poor capacity
  • Wandvacs aren’t the best for pet hair
  • Wandvacs are expensive

Our verdict: Are Shark handheld vacs any good?

You can count on a Shark vacuum to clean light messes in your house, car or on your stairs without kicking up a fuss. The CH950UKT is a great budget pet hair cleaner, but it has a limited run time. The Wandvacs will zoom around picking up all your miscellaneous mess, but don’t expect it to hold a lot.
