Wine is a very personal thing and almost everybody has specific likes and dislikes when it comes to wine. The best idea is to try lots of different kinds, make a note of the features you liked and then look for these features in future wines. Several of the above retailers allow you to order a ‘mixed case’ of wine so you can try a variety. They will also offer you recommendations on wines they think you will like. When tasting new wines, some good features to look out for are:
-Do you tend to prefer white, rosé or red wines?
-How dry is the wine?
-How sweet is the wine?
-What % alcohol is the wine?
-What flavours can you detect? These can include fruity flavours, woody flavours and even smoky flavours.
Wine is a popular drink to have alongside a nice dinner and it’s often really important that your chosen wine compliments your chosen food. As a general rule, white meat such as chicken pairs well with white wine and red meat such as steak pairs well with red wine. When pairing wine with fish, a rosé or even a sparkling wine will often go well.
The title of “best wine producing country” is aggressively fought over by several countries around the world. The most common agreement is that it depends on the type of wine as to which country produces the “best” and even then, it’s a highly subjective matter. Champagne, for example, can only be called Champagne if it is produced in the Champagne region of France. Therefore obviously the French make the best champagne. Some other wines that are significantly linked to certain countries include Argentina’s Malbec, Italy’s Prosecco and Australia’s Shiraz.
