Despite the rise of mobile phones and digital clocks it seems there will always be a place in our lives for beautifully crafted wristwatches.
Watches can make a beautiful present for a loved one and also a practical gift for yourself. The right watch will complete and outfit at the same time as making sure you aren’t late for the function you dressed for!
Buying the perfect watch can be a daunting task and often it’s hard to know where to begin. To help you out on your quest for the perfect watch, we’ve compiled a list of our favourite online watch retailers.
Manual and automatic watches are watches that run without batteries. Manual watches are the oldest type of watch and run based on the energy created when the watch’s owner winds a mechanism. Manual mechanisms are typically found in high end, expensive watches and can be quite high maintenance, often requiring to be wound every day. Automatic mechanisms use the movement of the wearers wrist to generate energy rather than relying on any winding action. As the wearer moves their wrist during daily activities, a weight connected to a spring within the watch moves and acts to ‘wind-up’ the watch.
‘Sapphire crystal’ refers to the material the glass on the outermost later of your watch may be made of. Sapphire crystal is a material formed from real or synthetic sapphires (without any colour) and is rated a 9 on the industry-standard hardness scale. The only substance with a higher hardness rating is diamond, which is rated 10. This means that if you have sapphire crystal covering on your watch face, it is unlikely (although not impossible) that it will become scratched. High quality watch brands such as Tag Heur use sapphire crystal on all their watches. Although you don’t need sapphire crystal, if you have the budget for it them it will make your watch better stand the test of time.
