Frequently asked questions

Should children wear face masks?

The latest policy from the UK government is that people in England, aged two and over, should wear a face-covering when in shops or on public transport. When it comes to children, face-coverings should not be used by those under the age of two, primary age children who may find it difficult to manage them correctly unassisted, or those with respiratory conditions.

What kind of material is best for a child’s mask?

Homemade or purchased cloth masks are suitable for a child over the age of two, although ensuring the right size and fit is very important. According to the CDC, pleated masks with elastic are likely to work best. Find out how to buy a cloth mask or make your own here.

What if a child is scared of wearing a mask?

Parents should encourage their child to practise wearing a mask at home before going out with one on, while trying to ensure they do not touch their face. If your child doesn’t understand the need for masks, focus on the idea of germs and explain that sometimes people wear masks when they are sick, and when they are better, they don’t need to wear them anymore. Parents could also try putting a mask on their child’s favourite stuffed animal or toy character, decorating a mask or showing their child pictures of other children wearing masks.

What about face masks for children with special health needs?

The US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that high risk or severely immunocompromised children should wear an N95 mask to best protect themselves. The families of these children are also encouraged to wear surgical masks if they are sick.

However, when it comes to healthy children over the age of two, medical masks should not be worn. Instead, they need to be reserved for healthcare professionals. If healthy children need to wear a mask out in public, they should use a securely fitted cloth mask.

Do children have to wear face masks at school?

Kids above primary school age only have to wear masks in school when moving around corridors and communal spaces where they’re more likely to mix with other years groups or teachers outside of their usual classroom environment. This means face masks do not have to be worn in classrooms.
