BLACK+DECKER Dustbuster Pivot 18V handheld vacuum review

How well does the BLACK+DECKER Dustbuster Pivot PV1820LRGPGB clean?

We tested this Pivot on carpet to see how well it fared tackling Cheerios, rice and biscuit crumbs. It has a standard power mode; no turbo features and no additional attachments – only the crevice and brush tool which is built onto the model.

The Pivot had no problem picking up rice; it got nearly all the grains in 3 sweeps without the extendable tools. It didn’t blow any away, nor did it get clogged. It did well with biscuit crumbs too, picking up around 90% of the mess in 3 sweeps – it took a couple more sweeps to get the finer pieces removed. The bigger scraps had to be shaken out of the nozzle head.

It was put to the test when sweeping up cereal, picking up more than 80% in 3 sweeps, but then the wheezing began. It tried to pick up the remaining bits but regurgitated almost half when we turned the vac off. This was worse when we held it downwards – cereal just fell from the nozzle.

On hard floor it suffered again with cereal, throwing up around a third of the handful we dropped when we tipped the nozzle downwards. This is despite its 0.44-litre capacity, which is far more than the average capacity. Because of this issue, it came third from last for cleaning hard floors, among the vacs we tested.

The Pivot redeems itself when cleaning crevices – it picked up almost all of the crumbs from the sofa in a couple of sweeps. Its thin crevice nozzle helps with this.

Our pick for carpet cleaning is the Gtech MK2 K9, which doesn’t clog even from larger debris.

Can the Dustbuster Pivot clean pet hair?

This handheld isn’t specifically promoted as a pet hair vac – some models, such as the Gtech MK2 K9 are – but BLACK + DECKER told us the Pivot can clean all types of debris, such as dust, dirt, pet hair and spills.

We smeared a handful of pet hair on carpet and without using the brush tool, it cleaned up about 70% of the hair in 3 sweeps. Using the brush leaves you with large tufts which can’t be easily removed from its bristles.

To get more hair out a lot more scrubbing was needed, since there’s no motorised tool with this model.

Cleaning pet hair from a sofa went slightly better with about 80% of fur swept in 3 passes. In 6 sweeps it cleaned 90% of the hair, but couldn’t clean the rest.

What’s the run time of the Pivot?

After 4 hours of charge you’ll get around 10 minutes of run time. There are models that will give you more – among those we’ve reviewed, this one ranks quite low for its charge-time-to-run-time ratio. If you don’t want to sweat over your vac turning off mid-clean, a stronger option is the Gtech Multi MK2 K9 or Dyson V7 Trigger.

How convenient is the Pivot?

The Pivot is pretty convenient to use, and especially easy to store. It folds in half, which isn’t the case for any of the others we reviewed. And you can simply open the side door to eject all the dust, and it won’t send anything flying in your face. Its 0.44-litre capacity is strong, but the nozzle does get clogged if you’re cleaning up large pieces.

The model also comes with a charger base and multiple tools if you want an extended or curved reach.

Its lack of a replacement battery is a drawback, as you’ll have to buy a new machine if the original one conks out.

Is the Pivot easy to use?

This model is heavier than average, among those we’ve reviewed, but has a handle for a firmer grip. It’ll navigate around corners and into hidey holes well, and is one of the only vacs that can pick dirt off the top of a unit without any acrobatics involved, due to its pivoting head.

Dustbuster Pivot customer reviews

This model has generally received good reviews on Amazon, where many praise its suction power, pivoting mechanism and storability. But some feel the run time is a letdown, and it’s a tad noisy. Others have had their models crash after a few months – the door hinge being particularly flimsy (based on over 2,000 reviews and last updated May 2022).

Pros and cons

  • Convenient flexible head for heights and furniture cleaning
  • Strong suction power
  • Good with crevices
  • Charging base

  • Limited run time
  • Some complaints about durability
  • Struggles with lodged-in pet hair
  • No motorised tools
  • 2 year warranty could be more, since there’s no replacement battery

Our verdict: Is the Dustbuster Pivot any good?

The Pivot is an excellent machine for tackling hard to-reach spots and will suck up most mess in one sweep. However, there are better vacs if you have pets rolling around on the settee all day long.

Given it doesn’t have any replacement batteries available, its 2-year warranty could be longer. Some user reviews complain about the battery giving up after a couple of years.

Expert review

Not much has changed with the Dustbuster Pivot since its release in 2013. This 2019 version retains the same flexible features as its predecessors. Its head will rotate and crane to reach tricky areas, high or low. Its integrated crevice tool and soft brush make light work of spillages on most surfaces, and it’s powerful enough to clean muck from deeper ridges. It was a let down in our pet hair test though, and its skinny nozzle can get clogged when sweeping bigger debris.
Its battery life could also be better. If you have a messy big car, it may run out before you’ve completely finished – and then you’ll need another 4 hours of charging. It doesn’t have any replacement batteries either, so you’ll have to buy another vac if the battery fails.
