What is UberX?

UberX is an on-demand, private ride service for one to four people with the lowest fares of any private Uber ride service. It uses modern, comfortable sedan vehicles and drivers with at least one year of driving experience who have passed a background test.

What types of cars are used?

Hundreds of car models from over 40 manufacturers are approved as UberX vehicles, including popular models like the Toyota Camry, Chevy Impala and Honda Accord. Cars are all model year 2006 or newer, and most cars that meet the model year requirement will be eligible for UberX.

Where is it available?

Uber is available in all 50 states, and UberX is the most popular option. It’s available in most cities, but some rural areas aren’t yet served. If Uber is available in your area, you’ll likely be able to call an UberX.

What is Uber Black?

Uber Black is a private ride service with more than a touch of luxury for business or a special occasion. Drivers are professional and dress to impress.

You’ll be allowed to set ride preferences in the app, like your preferred temperature, whether you need help with luggage and whether you want to chat with your driver or enjoy a quiet ride.

What types of cars are used?

As the name suggests, all cars are black and must be from Uber’s shortlist of high-end, modern vehicles with a model year of 2013 or newer. Starting January 2020, all Uber Black cars will need to be no more than five years old.

Uber is much more selective about the approved car models for Black cars. Most eligible models are high-end cars, like the Maserati Quattroporte or the BMW 7-series, but there are a few mid-range options that make the list, like the Chevy Tahoe and the Lexus GS. Approved car models vary by location, so you’ll need to check the Uber page for your city to find out what cars qualify.

Where is it available?

Uber Black is only available in select cities, including NYC, Los Angeles and Chicago. You can find out if it’s available in your area by checking on Uber’s website or downloading the app and checking for available cars in your area.

How much does each service cost?

Prices vary based on location, distance and time. To get an estimate, you can use Uber’s online price estimate tool.

For example, on October 9, 2019 at 12:34 p.m., we used Uber’s online tool to get a price estimate for a trip from JFK Airport to the Empire State Building. The price for an UberX was $74.48 and the price for an Uber Black was $116.04.
