US stocks slumped Friday as the market braces for a more aggressive interest rate hike in May that could push the economy into a recession. The decline came even as 79% of the companies that have reported earnings so far beat Wall Street estimates, according to Charles Schwab.
The S&P 500 Index and the Dow Jones Industrial Average both declined 2.8% Friday, reversing all their gains earlier in the week. The Nasdaq slumped, deepening this week’s loss.
Despite the downturn, SVB Financial Group (SIVB, up 11.4%) and Kimberly-Clark Corp. (KMB, up 9.6%) posted gains, becoming the best performing companies today.

SVB Financial (SIVB) shares rose 11.4% to $560.35 after the company raised its full year revenue outlook. CEO Greg Becker said the company will “invest part of the upside from rising rates into our business to support our continued momentum and leadership in the innovation economy.”

The second-best mover was Kimberly-Clark(KMB), the NYSE company. The company boosted its net sales growth outlook to 2% to 4% from an initial range of 1% to 2%. The maker of tissue and Huggies diapers could offset inflation by raising prices, keeping it on track to meet its sales target, Luzi Ann Javier, a markets editor at Finder, said.
