US stocks fell as comments from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell revived concerns of aggressive interest rate hikes that could push the economy into recession. That dampened sentiment among investors, overshadowing positive earnings news earlier in the day.
The S&P 500 declined 1.5% while Nasdaq tumbled 2.1%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 1.1%.

United Airlines Holdings Inc. (UAL) was the largest gainer today. The company bucked the trend, with shares climbing 9.8% to $51.10. The rally was fueled by the company’s forecast for a “solidly profitable” second quarter. It also had a “bullish outlook” on the industry, providing a tailwind for other airline stocks.
Nucor Corp. (NUE, up 6.4%) was the second -biggest gainer. Shares surged after the company predicted that the second quarter will be its most profitable three-month period in its history. The steelmaker continues to benefit from robust demand for the metal in nonresidential construction markets, Luzi Ann Javier, a markets editor at Finder said.
