The best performing companies today were Huaneng Power Intl (HNP, up 9.1%) and Discovery Inc. (DISCB, up 5.4%).

The market overall was slightly up, with the Nasdaq Composite and Dow gaining, but less than 1%.

The S&P 500 closed at $4,725.79, a new closing high, setting the stage for the year’s final trading week when stocks usually rise in low volume trading. The market is closed this Friday.

Huaneng Power Intl (HNP) was the top gainer today.

Shares in the company rose 9.1% to $28.28.

Huaneng was one of several utilities trading higher for the day, without any specific news.

The second-best mover was Discovery Inc. (DISCB), the NASDAQ company.

It rose 5.4% to reach $31.10.

“Discovery announced approval of its acquisition of AT&T’s WarnerMedia, and Wall Street liked the prospects,” said Finder Finance News Editor Ron Prichard.
