The best performing companies today were Mechel Pao ADRs (MTL-, up 11.9%) and United Microelectronics Corporation (New) (UMC, up 7.2%).
Overall the markets continued to struggle, with the Dow down 1.3% and the Nasdaq Composite surrendering 1.8%.

Mechel Pao ADRs (MTL-) was the dominant gainer today.
Shares in the company rose 11.9% to $1.79.
“There was no big news to drive MTL, but it was an up day for a lot of basic materials stocks,” said Finder’s Investments Publisher Ron Prichard.[/fin_hide]The second-best mover was United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC), a semiconductor manufacturer.
It rose 7.2% to reach $12.47.
“With a global chip shortage at the moment, semiconductor stocks should see growth,” said Finder’s Prichard.
