The best-performing companies today were Merck & Co (MRK, up 9.7%) and Goodrx Holdings Inc (GDRX, up 7.1%).

The Dow Jones Industrial Average took another wild swing Friday, climbing 482.54 to close out the week at 34,326.46. The Nasdaq followed suit, gaining 118.12 to wrap at 14,566.70. The S&P 500 edged up 49.50 to close at 4,357.04.

Merck & Company Inc (MRK) was the biggest gainer today.

Shares in the company rose 9.7% to $82.42.

“Merck was the Golden Child of the market Friday after it announced some positive clinical results for its antiviral pill intended to treat COVID-19,” said Sheri Bechtel, editor for Finder’s US share trading and investing team. “This, however, was bad news for vaccine makers like Moderna, which saw its stock slip on the headlines, as people’s perceptions about the dangers of COVID are likely to shift on this antiviral development.”

Another strong performer was GoodRx Holdings Inc (GDRX), a Nasdaq company.

It rose 7.1% to reach $42.57.
