The best performing companies in trading today were Agnico Eagle Mines Limited (AEM, up 4.4%) and Barrick Gold Corporation (GOLD, up 3.9%).
Overall the market suffered through a steep drop to end a weak week after a report showed steeper-than-expected inflation. The Dow was down 2.7% on the day to end the week off nearly 5%. The S&P 500 dropped 2.9% for the day, leaving it down 5.7% for the week and near bear market territory. And the Nasdaq Composite surrendered 3.5% for the day and 7% on the week.

Agnico Eagle Mines Limited (AEM) was the standout gainer today.
Shares in the company rose 4.4% to $53.59.

Also performing strongly was Barrick Gold Corporation (GOLD), the NYSE company.
It rose 3.9% to reach $20.87.
“There was no obvious news driving either stock, but commodities stocks do comparatively well in a down market and gold is seen as an inflation hedge,” said Finder Finance News Editor Ron Prichard. Both companies mine gold.
