The best performing companies in trading today were TJX Companies Inc. (TJX, up 8.7%) and Mid-America Apartment Communities Inc. Preferred Shares (MAA-I, up 7.0%).
Overall the selloff returned to Wall Street today, with the Dow shedding 1,100 points and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite off more than 3%. A weak earnings report from Target, on the heels of one from Walmart, helped fuel the downturn.

TJX Companies Inc. (TJX) was the largest gainer today.
Shares in the company rose 8.7% to $61.07.
“The parent of T.J. Maxx was the best stock in the S&P 500 and one of only a handful of gainers. It’s earnings reported showed a number of issues, but it beat the earnings estimate,” said Finder Finance News Editor Ron Prichard.

Second place for market gainers went to Mid-America Apartment Communities Inc. 8.50% Series I Cumulative Redeemable Preferred Stock (MAA-I), the NYSE company’s preferred class of shares. They rose 7.0% to reach $60.00.
