The best performing stocks on the NYSE and Nasdaq today were Alleghany (Y, up 24.9%) and Alcoa (AA, up 11.3%).
The market as a whole started the day positive, then fell just into the red ofter Fed Chairman Jerome Powell vowed tough action to curb inflation that some thought might go beyond already expected rate hikes. The Dow gave up 0.6%, the Nasdaq Composite shed 0.4%, and the S&P 500 was basically flat.

Alleghany Corporation (Y) was the biggest gainer today.
Shares in the company rose 24.9% to $845.00.
“Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B) is buying Alleghany for about $848, and shares shot up to just shy of that,” said Finder Finance News Editor Ron Prichard.
In second spot for market gains was Alcoa Corporation (AA), the NYSE company.
It rose 11.3% to reach $91.75.
“Alcoa benefitted from an analyst upgrade and Russia-related developments expected to raise the price of aluminum,” Prichard said.
