The best performing companies today were Splunk Inc. (SPLK, up 7.7%) and Occidental Petroleum Corporation (OXY, up 6.7%).
The market ended the day mostly in the red, making it another down week. The Dow shed 180 points, or 0.5%, ending the week off 0.8%. The Nasdaq shed 1.7% for the day and 1.9% for the week, while the S&P 500 gave up 0.8% on the day and 0.6% on the week.

Splunk Inc. (SPLK) was the largest gainer today.
Shares in the company rose 7.7% to $131.23.
The small software maker announced that private-equity firm Hellman & Friedman had taken nearly an 8% stake in the company, making it the largest shareholder.

Second place for market gainers went to Occidental Petroleum Corporation (OXY), the NYSE company.
It rose 6.7% to reach $50.96.
“The stock outpaced other oil names today, but that whole sector is rising due to high oil prices,” said Finder Finance News Editor Ron Prichard.
