The best performing stocks on the NYSE and Nasdaq today were Unilever Plc (UL, up 6.9%) and Vodafone Group Plc ADRs (VOD, up 5.5%).
The market as a whole saw a whipsaw day, with the Dow finishing up 99 points after dropping as much as 1,000 points into the red. The Nasdaq and S&P 500 also finished slightly up.

Unilever Plc (UL) was the biggest gainer today.
Shares in the company rose 6.9% to $52.69.
“Unilever got a boost from news reports that activist investor Nelson Peltz is buying, raising the possibility of spinoffs and other positives,” said Finder Finance News Editor Ron Prichard.

Also performing strongly was Vodafone Group Plc ADRs (VOD). The NASDAQ company rose 5.5% to reach $16.70 on news it is exploring mergers.
