The best performing stocks in NYSE and Nasdaq trading today were Tesla Inc. (TSLA, up 9.0%) and Viacomcbs Inc. (VIACA, up 7.2%).

Overall the market jumped into 2021 on a high note. The Dow gained 246 points to close at a record 36,585.06. The S&P 500 also gained about 0.6% and closed at a record. The Nasdaq Composite was the day’s leader, rising 1.2%.

Tesla Inc. (TSLA) was the dominant gainer today.

Shares in the company rose 9.0% to $1151.40.

“Tesla reported strong production numbers and seems to have shaken off the hangover from Elon Musk’s recent stock sales,” said Finder Finance News Editor Ron Prichard.

Also performing strongly was ViacomCBS (VIACA). The NASDAQ company rose 7.2% to reach $35.76.
