History of Tom Sachs Rocket Factory Collection

NFTs making NFTs – how perverse! And yet, that’s exactly the idea behind the rather ingenious Tom Sachs: Rocket Factory. Taking inspiration from the Tom Sachs: Space Program, which landed 2 astronauts on the moon, the Rocket Factory is more than a simple series of NFTs. It is a collection of rocket-based artwork that can be used to create other rocket-based artwork, leading to something greater (and rarer) than the sum of its parts. The idea was to provide a project where users could make their own NFTs, placing the power into the community’s hands. The project initially launched in July 2021, which was followed by a drop of 3,000 component NFTs. Three components, the nose cone, body and tail assembly, are required to construct a completed rocket NFT. In the assembly process, all 3 components are burnt – resulting in one brand new NFT. Component NFTs can be claimed and exchanged with other holders to create new rockets. According to the project’s website, there are 2 types of finished rockets; a perfect rocket and a frankenrocket. A perfect rocket is when the branding of the nose cone, body and tail assembly all match. A frankenrocket is when all components display different branding.

Evaluating Tom Sachs Rocket Factory Collection

Tom Sachs: Rocket Factory is an ambitious project, pushing the bounds of what can be done with the NFT world. A large part of the Rocket Factory project draws inspiration from the idea of NFTs. NFTs are essentially unique parts, so why not use them to create a new, unique NFT?

The Rocket Factory is about more than just the NFTs, though. There are more than 100,000 possible component combinations when making a rocket. However, according to the project’s website, only 1,000 rockets can ever be minted – it is up to the community to decide which.
