This is the first app-based rental car insurer in the U.S.

New app is first to let you buy rental car insurance

With a few taps on a smartphone app, you can now get coverage for your rental car trip.

The first app-based rental car insurance product for customers in the United States was recently launched by SURE, and its plans cover vehicles from all car rental companies.

The SURE app works on iPhones and Android phones in all 50 U.S. states, as well as internationally, and the company claims its ordering process can be completed in less than one minute.

Besides being the first app-based insurer to market, SURE also provides travelers with the potential for significant cost savings – if you need to get rental car insurance in the first place. While some rental car insurance policies cost more than the actual rental charge, SURE is offering its plan for less than $10 per day.

The SURE rental car insurance covers physical damage up to $100,000, theft of personal property from your car, and charges for lost keys, towing and flat tires.

The SURE policy is underwritten by Chubb, the world’s largest publicly traded property and casualty insurance company and the largest commercial insurer in the US.

The big question for most travelers, however, is whether you need rental car insurance at all. Some rental car agencies provide limited coverage, albeit with higher excesses, on the vehicles they lease. These excesses can often be reduced to as little as $0 for an additional fee. If you have health and life insurance, you may already be covered for medical expenses and death benefits stemming from a car accident. Also check to see if your personal auto insurance already covers collision damage and liability while driving a rental car. What about stolen items from a rental car? Actually, your homeowners insurance might have your back.

Learn more using our guide to rental car insurance and be sure to check your policies to see whether rental car insurance is worth it. If you find your own insurance lacking, consider comparing other options for better coverage – and possibly lower costs, from your auto insurance, homeowners insurance, renters insurance and life insurance.

There are also many other potential hazards involved in taking a big trip. Learn more about whether travel insurance would protect you from unanticipated cancellations, delays, lost baggage, emergency evacuation and more using our travel insurance guide.
