History of Damien Hirst - The Currency Collection

Damien Hirst is an artist who rose to prominence on the UK art scene during the 1990s. In fact, he is England’s wealthiest artist, boasting a net worth of approximately US$384 million. Hirst, in collaboration with HENI, released The Currency in July 2021, a collection of over 10,000 “dot-based” artworks created since 2016. Interested investors could sign up to the program and decide whether they wanted to receive a physical copy of the art or a digital NFT version. The medium they did not select would be burned.

In the collection’s history, the greatest day of trading was on 15 August, when 247 NFTs were sold via third-party marketplaces at an average price of around US$30,000. The market value for the entire collection is estimated to be $500 million. The highest-selling artwork was “Can’t you just be as sweet as she says”, which sold for US$136,893.

Evaluating Damien Hirst - The Currency Collection

The Currency is an interesting project. The distribution of 10,000 artworks/NFTs was intended to represent a form of currency, hence the collection’s name. Each artwork included in the collection possesses a hologram, a microdot and a watermark, much like fiat currency (cash).

The NFT collection is built on the Palm blockchain, which is an ecosystem designed specifically for NFTs that operate on Ethereum. It claims to be 99% more energy efficient than Ethereum Layer 1 and Bitcoin protocols.

Each artwork is connected to an ERC-721 token standard, much like the popular NFT collection CryptoPunks.

The initial public sale period of the collection was oversubscribed – more than 30,000 investors wanted access to 10,000 different NFTs. This scarcity has led to a strong-performing secondary marketplace with price mark-ups of up to 2,000%.
