You can still get bike coverage even though you’re required to file an SR-22. But expect higher rates and a more limited selection of insurance providers than before.

When do I need SR-22 motorcycle insurance?

SR-22 motorcycle insurance is actually not an insurance policy in itself. An SR-22, also known as an SR-22 bond or CFR (certificate of financial responsibility), is simply a form that proves you’re meeting the state’s insurance requirements.

You may be required to file an SR-22 to regain your full driver’s license if you have committed a violation, like a DUI or driving uninsured. If so, you’ll be notified by a judge during court or by your state’s DMV.

Reasons you may need an SR-22 include:

  • Driving uninsured
  • Driving with a suspended license
  • Getting a DUI or DWI
  • Multiple driving violations
  • Reckless driving
  • A variety of coverage and add-ons.
  • Many discounts available.
  • Rewards responsible riders.

What’s included with SR-22 motorcycle insurance?

SR-22 insurance offers similar coverage to normal insurance. Your company will need to add the SR-22 to your policy and file the required form with your state.

You can choose standard motorcycle coverage as long as the insurance company offers support filing SR-22s.

Coverage you might need includes:

  • Liability. Take responsibility for medical expenses and vehicle damage you cause in an accident.
  • Collision. Pay for your own motorcycle repairs during an at-fault accident.
  • Comprehensive. Cover noncollision damage including theft, vandalism, falling tree branches and hitting an animal.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist. Pay for damage caused by another driver when that driver doesn’t have enough insurance to cover you.
  • Loan/lease gap. Take care of the remainder of your loan or lease after a total loss accident.
  • Medical payments. Make sure you’re covered for expensive medical bills related to an accident.
  • Roadside assistance. Get help for minor roadside repairs, like fuel delivery, battery jumpstarts and towing.
  • Trip interruption. Take care of food and lodging if your bike breaks down away from home.
  • Safety gear. Pay for damage to protective apparel, such as your helmet and safety eyewear.
  • Optional motorcycle equipment. Cover customized equipment including extra chrome, saddlebags or a premium paint job.

How does SR-22 motorcycle insurance work?

You can either add an SR-22 onto an existing motorcycle policy or apply for a new policy. In both cases, make sure your insurance company offers SR-22 filing. If it doesn’t, you’ll need to look elsewhere for coverage.

Adding an SR-22 may raise your premium because the insurance company considers you a high-risk driver. For example, the average insurance increase for a DUI is over $1,200, but your actual rate increase could be more or less depending on the reason for the SR-22.

Here’s the basic process of getting a motorcycle SR-22:

  • Call your current insurer or get an online quote from a new insurer. Check for an SR-22 option during the quote process.
  • If you’re not sure the company offers SR-22s, talk to a representative to add the SR-22.
  • Your insurance company then files the required proof with your state. You might see higher insurance rates.
  • Check how long you need to keep the SR-22 on your policy. This may be specified by the judge or DMV.

SR-22 motorcycle insurance in action

David was riding his motorcycle on the highway one day when a car hit him at an intersection. He bought the motorcycle a few months before but hadn’t purchased insurance for it yet. Though the accident wasn’t his fault, his lack of coverage came to light in the police report.

David then received a statement from the DMV that he would be required to file an SR-22 for three years. He promptly applied for motorcycle insurance and added the SR-22 onto his policy.

Luckily David’s insurance company covers people with SR-22s, and filed the proper form with the state. But his insurance rate was higher than expected due to the driving violation on his record.

What’s not covered by SR-22 motorcycle insurance?

You can still get a standard motorcycle policy if you need an SR-22. However, you may not qualify for coverage by all insurance companies, limiting your choice of provider.

You also might not qualify for certain discounts and benefits, like safe driving discounts, claims-free policy and accident forgiveness.

Bottom line

If you’re required to show proof of insurance to your state, you can usually add an SR-22 to a new or existing motorcycle policy. Your insurance company files the required form for you. However, because you’re now considered a high-risk driver, you may have a harder time finding an insurer and will see an increase in your premium.
