SocialEngine provides social networking tools for your website. It offers a self-hosted option that requires coding but allows for customization or a less complicated cloud option that helps you create a site hosted by SocialEngine.
Try before you buy with SocialEngine’s free trial — 14 days for Cloud and 30 days for PHP — to determine which option might be best for your needs.
With this monthly cloud-based subscription, you can set up a site nearly instantaneously for members to log in to through their social media accounts. SocialEngine then hosts, supports and updates your site when you need it. All for $29 a month.
SocialEngine Cloud is a white label service, which means it doesn’t include advertising or it’s own brand anywhere on your site. And you’ll get continued API updates and access to CSS or HTML coding.
If you’ve the chops for standalone software, look to SocialEngine PHP, which gives you access to the PHP source code you need to build your own social network.
Choose from three package options, each priced for one site and offering free support to get you rolling for at least a month after signup.
Each package offers tools to customize your services and potentially cut costs. Say you need only one or two features of the Advanced package. You could sign up for Essential and purchase the individual features you want.
Tool | Cost |
---|---|
Atlas | $89 |
Video sharing | $40 |
Polls | $30 |
Photo albums | $40 |
Music sharing | $30 |
Mobile | $40 |
Groups | $40 |
Forums | $40 |
Events | $40 |
Classifieds | $40 |
Chat and IM | $30 |
Blogs | $40 |
SocialEngine also supports third-party apps and features that can help you run online contests, create guest logins, change the language or theme of your site and more. Some are free, others cost $100 or more. Browse the Marketplace tab to check out everything that’s available.
Pay for either version of SocialEngine with a major credit card or through PayPal.
For SocialEngine Cloud, you can pay either monthly or annually. Annual subscribers get 25% off the cost of their packages by paying for the year up front.
Note that if you choose SocialEngine Cloud and later decide you’d like to switch payment methods, you may be required to cancel and restart your subscription.
SocialEngine offers a 30-day trial of its PHP software that’s identical to the full version. And so it limits refunds to SocialEngine products that you can’t properly install on your server. To get a refund, SocialEngine staff must also experience an unsuccessful installation.
Software companies don’t offer discounts too often. But if SocialEngine offers a sale, it’s likely to announce one through its e-newsletter.
Free trials for each service are available year-round. If you’re purchasing licenses in bulk, contact customer service to see if you can negotiate a discount.

SocialEngine is an easy, efficient service designed to get a social media platform running on your website. Its flexible services fit all levels of expertise, and a friendly support team is a plus.
We appreciate the company’s 25% discount on subscriptions if you pay in full annually, not to mention multiple packages and add-ons to customize your site just right. If you’re the hands-on type, you might want to download SocialEngine’s software for a one-time fee.
Customers like that SocialEngine is a white label product, true to its word. Your users won’t see SocialEngine ads or anything else on your site unless you put them there.
Most customers found the software easy to install and use. Users also like the range of apps available from third-party developers, which can lead to unlimited site growth.
SocialEngine was founded by Charlotte Genevier and Alex Benzer in 2007 as Webligo. Facebook had only just taken off, but the developers saw what could come of connecting people who already know each other or shared mutual interests, and they made it their mission to do the same.
Within its first four years of operation, SocialEngine was powering social networks for online companies like Apple, Mastercard, NASA and Shell. It released the cloud-based version of its software in 2011, way ahead of the trend.
Today, it’s an industry leader in social media creation. It runs more than 25,000 websites that connect over 5 million users.
Get in touch with the customer service team through the site’s secure online form. Scroll to the bottom of the homepage and click Contact to launch the online email form. Or email directly at sales@socialengine.com.
If you happen to be in Colorado, you can drop by the company’s Boulder office.
If you’re already a customer and need help, submit a support ticket through the site.
SocialEngine runs a blog that chronicle developments in the industry and within its own software. It offers valuable tips on such topics as creating an online presence on a budget.
While its YouTube channel features tutorials and tours of the SocialEngine software, its Twitter and Facebook pages are largely used for advertising and some communication with customers.
The company also maintains a profile on Hive, where it encourages contributions and engagement with the SocialEngine community.
Beginners and experienced users alike might find SocialEngine a solid option on which to build a basis for your social network. You can customize subscriptions through three packages and add-ons, with the ability to integrate third-party apps for a whole world of potential.
This company runs websites for some of the world’s largest companies, so you can trust it to help run yours. If you’re on the fence, you can always check out SocialEngine’s free trial before fully committing.
