When is Singles Day?

Singles Day always falls on November 11th.

The unofficial Chinese holiday called Guanggun Jie started back in the ’90s as a way to encourage singles to treat themselves. In 2009, online retail giant Alibaba cashed in on the holiday with the first Singles Day sale. In 2018, the company set a new record, raking in a staggering $30.8 billion in revenue in a single 24-hour period. Compare that to Black Friday’s $6.22 billion revenue in the same year, and it’s easy to see just how expansive this sale day has become.

Where to shop on Singles Day

While Alibaba traditionally holds the lion’s share of Singles Day sales, you might be surprised at how many other retailers follow suit and offer serious discounts for singles.

Alibaba

The majority of Singles Day sales are still available from Alibaba and its sister companies like AliExpress. But don’t fret if you’re shopping in the US — an array of shipping and secure payment options are available.

In the past, we’ve seen discounts of up to 60% on tech items, headphones, sound systems, handbags, T-shirts and more.

Bottom line

On the heels of Alibaba’s record-breaking success, Singles Day is quickly spreading to the US. Popular brands like Happy Socks, L’Occitane and Urban Outfitters all participated last year, and we expect that list to keep growing.

In the meantime, start scoping out Black Friday deals from your favorite retailers to see if you might be able to double-dip in both sales events.
