What are the other MSIG travel insurance options available?

In addition to its individual cover, MSIG also offers travel insurance for families (TravelEasy – Family) and those with pre-existing medical conditions (TravelEasy Pre-Ex) at varying premium rates. Do keep in mind that there may be additional restrictions that come with these types of policies.

For example, MSIG states that under a family annual policy, those insured need not travel together on a trip. However, children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian for any trip. Also, be aware that individual cover limits for children tend to be lower than for adults.

The overall cost of any type of travel insurance policy depends on how much coverage you want, destination and trip duration.

What won’t be covered?

Each travel insurance provider has a set of standard exclusions, along with restrictions depending on the policy you choose.

An MSIG travel insurance policy won’t typically cover you for:

  • Travel to a war zone
  • Claims for terminal illness
  • Mental health disorders
  • Damage or breakage of sports equipment while in use
  • Accidents or inconveniences resulting from illegal acts
  • Claims arising from the influence of alcohol or non-prescription drugs
  • Loss or damaged belongings due to negligence
  • Undeclared pre-existing conditions
  • Confiscated items by customs officials
  • Pregnancy-related costs
  • Any claims if you travelled specifically for medical purposes, such as cosmetic surgery
  • Unnecessary dental expenses
  • Any kind of false, exaggerated or inaccurate claim

Make sure you understand the full list of exclusions and conditions which are stated in your policy document so that you avoid any nasty surprises when it comes to making a claim.

    Making a claim

MSIG makes it easy to file a claim on your travel insurance. You can complete the process online – including via your mobile phone – on their website. Afterwhich, you may download a copy of the submitted claim form, or request for the hardcopy to be sent to you.

If necessary, a police report linked to your claim should be made within 24 hours of the event. Be sure to request a copy of this report for your submission.

After you’ve filed your claim, MSIG aims to settle it within three weeks of receiving all the relevant documents.

    About MSIG

With a presence in Singapore for over 100 years, MSIG is a well-trusted brand in Singapore and one of Asia’s leading general insurers. The brand is one of the few foreign‑based general insurers that offer a wide range of personal and commercial insurance solutions.

MSIG Insurance (Singapore) Pte. Ltd. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of MSI and a member of the MS&AD Insurance Group.

    Bottom line

MSIG has a wide range of travel cover and each of its policies includes the basics you’d expect to feel assured you’ll be financially protected if things go wrong when you’re overseas.

If you’re considering its Standard plan, do bear in mind that some of its cover levels are fairly low (e.g. S$3,000 cover limit for personal possessions). MSIG’s TravelEasy Elite and Premier plans, on the other hand, are feature-rich and would be more likely to meet your needs. Especially since they include helpful extras such as cover for a range of sports and up to S$500 back if you’re forced to miss a concert.

As always, it’s advisable to find the correct level of cover for your needs instead of choosing one because of its low premium. Also, travel insurance varies a lot between providers and so in order to find the best deal for you, it’s a good idea to compare a range of different policies.
