What types of promotions does Standard Chartered offer?

Standard Chartered offers a variety of credit card promotions across their entire credit card range and also for specific cards. On top of welcome offers for new members, the main credit card promotions on offer include The Good Life (TGL), 360° Rewards programme and other online rewards.

New card signups

There’s a range of welcome gifts available for new cardholders. At the time of writing, the deals on offer include cash back of around S$138 upon signing up to various eligible cards via MyInfo, including the Standard Chartered Unlimited Cashback Credit Card. There is also an opportunity to earn bonus miles when you sign up to the Standard Chartered Visa Infinite Credit Card.

The Good Life Privileges

The Good Life Privileges (TGL) program offers over 120 credit card promotions across areas such as dining, retail, lifestyle, travel, online external merchants and restaurants. You can get discounts on your bookings and purchases, cash back on eligible minimum spends, free coupon packs, one dines free and other savings with your Standard Chartered card. Some of the partner merchants available include Agoda, Tangs, Taobao, Lazada, Zalora, Expedia and more.

360° Rewards Points

Standard Chartered also offers a tiered rewards earning program that all of its card members are automatically entered into when they become Standard Chartered users. When you spend over a minimum amount, such as S$250, using your Standard Chartered credit card, you can earn rewards points at a rate between 1 to 2.5 times the points per S$1 spent. You can save these rewards points and redeem them for dining and shopping vouchers from the Standard Chartered online rewards store.

How to choose the best Standard Chartered credit card promotion

You need to consider several key factors before deciding which Standard Chartered credit card promotion is best for you.

  • Current eligibilities. Most Standard Chartered credit card promotions are open to all Standard Chartered cardholders; however, if you are after a particular promotion, you should read the specific redemption terms and conditions carefully prior to making any purchase or booking.
  • Welcome offers. For those that find a particular welcome offer appealing, be sure that you fully understand the rates, fees and benefits available to you with that card before signing up.
  • Lifestyle and spending habits. While there are over 100 partner merchants and restaurants on offer, Standard Chartered may not always have the biggest discounts or best terms on a particular deal. For those that prioritise finding the greatest savings on every deal, you may want to consider whether the specific merchant is currently offering a better deal elsewhere. You should also consider your personal preferences when deciding whether a particular credit card promotion is right for you. If you prefer dining at your favourite local joint or have a hair salon you’ve been patronising for years, you probably won’t be as tempted by a free meal deal or discounted service somewhere else.
  • Terms and conditions. After you’ve decided on the promotion you want, you need to check how long the offer is valid for. The promotional period will be advertised on the specific credit card promotion landing page. You should also consider its specific terms and conditions. For example, many dining promotions are not valid on public holidays and other prime times such as weekends.

Pros and cons of Standard Chartered credit cards

Pros

  • Cashback. When your application for a Standard Chartered card is approved, you may apply for an instant Digital Credit Card and receive up to $80 cashback.
  • Rewards. Most Standard Chartered members can qualify for the 360° Rewards program by spending a minimum of S$250 per month on retail purchases with this card. There are a wide range of redemption offers available on the Online Rewards store, including cash rebates, dining, shopping, wellness, leisure, travel and home vouchers, as well as the option to convert your points to Air Miles. Furthermore, all cardholders can receive discounts on over 120 popular merchants and restaurants through Standard Chartered’s The Good Life (TGL) program. You can also access this program via its own TGL app.
  • Complimentary extras. Standard Chartered also offers a range of additional card features:
    • EasyPay. With this service, you can convert retail transactions over about S$500 into 6 or 12 month interest-free instalments for a one-time service fee of 5%.
    • Funds transfer. You are eligible to transfer funds over a certain minimum amount at 0% interest for 3 to 12 months for a one-time processing fee from o.7%.

    Cons

    • Limited redemption period. Generally, Standard Chartered credit card promotions are on offer for a limited time only and will have a fixed cap on the total number of redemptions available to all customers during the period. You should check the specific promotion expiry date before proceeding with any booking confirmation or purchase.
    • Minimum spend requirements. Many discounts require a minimum spend before you can qualify for the deal, such as 10% off your total bill when you spend S$40 or more at a dining merchant. Some minimum spend offers are only open to new users of the external merchant, restaurant or service.
    • Blackout dates. Particularly for accommodation and flight deals, the promotion will only be valid during fixed booking and stay periods. Promotions often can’t be redeemed during blackout dates, which usually will be the most popular travel periods and peak times such as on public holidays and weekends.

    Bottom line

Before signing up for any credit card, you should consider all card-specific rates, fees and benefits first beyond the introductory period and read the terms and conditions carefully.
