Sompo car insurance review Singapore

While Sompo may not be one of the household names when you think about car insurance in Singapore, many drivers still choose to insure with them.

Why? Well, the Japanese insurer does have a few perks up its sleeve that many drivers will appreciate, such as free NCD Protector, free excess waiver, an emergency response unit and multiple discounts to sweeten the deal.

We give a quick rundown on the plans available at Sompo and how to get the best bang for your buck when purchasing from the insurer.

Overview of Sompo car insurance plans

Like most major car insurance providers, Sompo offers TPO and TPFT in addition to its comprehensive plans.

Sompo’s TPO plans cover only what is legally required for driving on roads in Singapore. TPO only covers your liabilities for damage or injury/death caused to others and their property — that is, if you hit and injure a pedestrian or knock down a gantry while using the car. Any damage to your own car is your responsibility.

The Third Party Fire & Theft (TPFT) is largely the same as the TPO, but includes some extra coverage, such as payouts in the very specific instances of fire or theft.

Sompo’s TPO and TPFT are great options for value conscious drivers, especially those who are driving a cheap or old car; or for experienced drivers whose car is nearing the end of its COE lifespan.

Otherwise, if you are looking for better coverage, consider Sompo’s 3 comprehensive plans: ExcelDrive Focus, ExcelDrive Gold, ExcelDrive Prestige (listed from the cheapest to the most premium). These comprehensive plans sufficiently cover most of all basics you’ve come to expect: car repairs, total loss/damage, third party damage, personal accident, and medical expenses.

Highlights of Sompo’s comprehensive plans include:

  • Free No Claim Discount (NCD) Protector if you are enjoying 30% NCD and above (only for ExcelDrive Gold and ExcelDrive Prestige)

  • Loss of use benefits of $100 per day up to 10 days (only for ExcelDrive Gold and ExcelDrive Prestige)

  • 24-hour Emergency Mobile Accident Response Service (MARS)

  • Unlimited windscreen cover

  • Free cover for damages as a result of riot, strike, civil commotion, flood and windstorm

  • Credit card instalment applicable for selected banks

Sompo ExcelDrive Focus

Sompo’s cheapest comprehensive plan, the Sompo ExcelDrive Focus does not skimp on coverage. For a low price, it includes coverage for:

  • Vehicle repair at authorised workshops;

  • Loss or damage to your vehicle due to accident (up to market value at time of loss or damage);

  • Unlimited windscreen cover (with applicable excess); and

The insurer’s handy 24-hour MARS is also included, which is a real boon for the price. So in case you get into an accident, all you need to do is call Sompo and it will send a MARS officer to the accident scene within 20 minutes, anywhere in Singapore. The officer will provide advice, take photographs, complete the accident statement and perform E-filing of claims on your behalf. If necessary, he/she will also recommend the nearest authorised workshop and arrange towing service.

Sompo ExcelDrive Gold & Prestige

If you are going with Sompo, its two higher tier comprehensive plans are really worth the extra premium.

An upgrade to Sompo ExcelDrive Gold gives you additional benefits such as:

  • Loss of use ($100 per day, up to 10 days), one of the highest in the industry

  • NCD Protector (Applicable to NCD of 30%, 40% and 50%)

  • Full excess waiver up to $1,000 (depends on your NCD) on your first claim per policy year if repair is done at an authorised workshop

Sompo’s ExcelDrive Prestige plan offers the same coverage as ExcelDrive Gold, except that you will also be able to repair your vehicle at your preferred motor workshop. This makes the plan an especially good option for those driving luxury cars or cars with specialty parts that cannot be found in every workshop.

Sompo car insurance add-ons

In addition to the benefits listed above, you can also customise your policy with the following Sompo add-ons:

  • Excess Buy Up option – enjoy a premium discount by increasing the excess that you have to bear with each claim

  • Personal accident – increase your personal accident sum insured by $10,000

Get discounts off Sompo car insurance

Sompo does not offer the cheapest car insurance premiums. But eligible drivers may save on their premiums even more if they stack the following Sompo discounts:

  • Up to 50% NCD (10% for each consecutive year you don’t file a claim)

  • 5% loyalty discount on renewal

  • 5% Offence Free Discount (OFD) will be granted automatically if NCD is 30% and above
