In this review, we’ll take a look at N26’s plans, costs, and benefits to help you decide if it matches your needs.

What is N26?

N26 is a digital bank headquartered in Germany. It offers fully digital checking accounts that are controlled from within an app — and without any branches — and customers can access their money with a contactless debit card. N26 is already operating in Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, Belgium and a wide range of other European countries, and it launched in the US in July 2019.

N26 is not available in Singapore yet

As of 27 November 2020, N26 hasn’t launched in Singapore so you’ll not be able to sign up for an account. If you’re keen to know it’s availability here, simply keep your eyes peeled on this post or sign up for N26’s waiting list.

However, you can use N26 in Singapore if you already have an account. Current N26 users travelling to Singapore will continue to find it reliable and accessible since N26 cards are well-accepted island-wide.

How N26 works in Singapore

Since N26 is an online bank, it works the same globally, Singapore included! However, there are only two exceptions to take note of:

  • Signing up. Singapore citizens can sign up for N26 digital bank accounts, but it must be done when they are living in any of the following countries: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal, Finland, Luxembourg, Slovenia, Estonia, Greece, Slovakia, the UK, Poland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland, and the United States.
  • ATM withdrawal fees. Current N26 users visiting Singapore will face an ATM withdrawal fee of 1.7% per withdrawal if using the free N26 Bank Account.

What can you do with N26 in Singapore?

N26 digital bank offers four account types to users: N26 Bank Account, N26 Smart, N26 You and N26 Metal. They each come with a Mastercard, free currency payments and free ATM withdrawals in Europe. Be sure to download N26’s app once you sign up for any of its plans, as the app offers spending insights and security features for you to manage your account.

How much does N26 cost?

Here’s a list of the costs you can expect to incur when using an N26 digital bank account:

  • Account fees. Although the N26 Bank Account is free, N26 Smart costs €4.90/month, N26 You costs €9.90 per month and N26 Metal costs €16.90 per month
  • Overdraft fee. Overdrafted accounts are charged 8.9% on the overdrawn amount.
  • ATM fees. Users withdrawing cash in the Eurozone can enjoy limited free withdrawals per month. After which, it’ll cost €2 per withdrawal. For withdrawals in other currencies, a fee of 1.7% will be charged if you’re using the N26’s free account.

What are the monthly withdrawal limits for ATM withdrawals in euros?

N26 account holders from all countries (except Austria and Italy) are entitled to 5 free withdrawals in the first 3 months, and 3 free withdrawals for subsequent months. To continue enjoying 5 free withdrawals, you’ll need to credit a salary of at least €1,000 for 2 consecutive months to your N26 account.

N26 You and N26 Metal account holders are entitled to 5 and 8 free monthly withdrawals respectively.

How do N26 accounts work?

These are the features offered by N26 accounts:

  • Make transfers. Send, receive and even request money from friends instantly.
  • Google Pay and Apple Pay. Make payments on the go by adding your N26 card to Apple Pay or Google Pay.
  • Security features. Set spending and withdrawal limits, reset PINs, freeze your card or disable online payments whenever you like
  • Track your purchases. Automatic categorisation of your purchases
  • Spaces feature. Place your money in sub-accounts to meet both short and long-term savings goals

How to use N26 abroad

Unlike traditional banks, N26 doesn’t leverage any fees or charges on foreign currency transactions. It also allows you to send money in 19 different currencies via the N26 app.

While travelling, you can enjoy up to 5 free withdrawals in Euros. Without a paid account, however, you’ll have to pay 1.7% for international ATM withdrawals.

Is N26 safe?

The app itself has a three-tier security procedure protecting your account and transactions. Your account can only be paired to one smartphone at a time, you must log in to your account using your password or fingerprint, and you must verify all online and offline transactions with your PIN.

N26 also offers a Bug Bounty program that offers cash rewards to encourage security researchers to track down bugs in their cybersecurity systems.

What are the benefits of using N26?

N26 has app-based, so you control your accounts from your smartphone. Unique features include:

  • Large ATM network.Use your N26 debit card for free at over 55,000 AllPoint ATMs worldwide.
  • In-app security. Set and change daily spend/withdrawal limits, reset your PIN, lock or unlock your card and enable or disable online or foreign payments.
  • Budgeting. Get automatic breakdowns of your purchases by category and put your money into sub-accounts so you don’t accidentally spend it.
  • Early direct deposits. Receive direct deposits up to two days in advance with N26.
  • Perks. Earn cashback when you use your N26 debit card for subscription services like Booking.com, Lime, Headspace, Babbel, Curology, Headout and more.

What should you look out for?

Although N26 has some unique perks, there are a few drawbacks to watch out for, including no bank branches:

  • No interest. This account doesn’t earn any interest, so it’s not ideal for those who need a savings account.
  • Limited fee-free ATM withdrawals within the Eurozone. Depending on your account type, you’ll may only benefit from 3 to 8 fee-free withdrawals.
  • Foreign currency withdrawals fees. 1.7% ATM withdrawal fees apply for N26 account users.

If you prefer a traditional chequing account, you’ll want to keep looking. As always, compare your options when looking for a current account.

How do you register for N26 in Singapore?

N26 currently does not accept registration from Singapore. However, if you’re a Singaporean residing overseas, these are the criteria you should meet in order to qualify:

  • Resident in any of these countries: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal, Finland, Luxembourg, Slovenia, Estonia, Greece, Slovakia, the UK, Poland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland, and the United States.
  • You must be a citizen of any of the 164 countries mentioned on their site. Fortunately, Singapore is included so you can simply sign up for your account while visiting or living in any of the supported countries.

Once you qualify for an account, download the N26 mobile application. Enter your personal details and choose your desired plan. Verify your identity and pair your account with your smartphone. Finally, top up your account while waiting for N26 to send your card over.
