People who have had experience employing a foreign domestic worker (more commonly known as maids) will know that they’ve to pay for quite a number of items besides just wages – the levy, her daily expenses, and even her flight ticket home. Most likely, they’ll recruit the maid from an agency, who will also take care and complete all the necessary documentation and briefing, including the compulsory maid insurance.

Maid insurance serves to protect the domestic helper and also the employer.

The most important coverages in a maid insurance plan are the medical expenses and personal accident cover because these will ensure that the maid has access to the required medical treatment should any incident occur.

Maid insurance also benefits the employer as they’ll not have to fork out hefty medical bills. Should the maid run away from home, or somehow cause harm to other people, the insurance will also come in handy for employers.

In short, maid insurance will be highly relevant in these scenarios:

  1. Something happens to the maid
  2. Something happens to others because of something your maid did
  3. Something happens to you because of your maid

Medical coverage for when your maid falls ill

The most basic of maid insurance policies comes with at least $15,000 in hospitalisation and surgery cover. This covers for inpatient care and day surgeries should your maid be hospitalised.

What you should look out for is the outpatient cover, which is not a compulsory cover, but it covers for medical expenses for a visit to clinics, including Chinese Physicians. For FWD’s maid insurance, the included outpatient cover covers for incidents arising from accidents only. For all other outpatient medical expenses, they come as an add-on, and it covers up to $30 per visit with a $10 excess i.e. you pay the first $10, the insurer pays up to $30 thereafter.

Dengue and Zika cover are by default included, and medical expenses for the maid will be covered should she contract these viruses.

And should your maid be hospitalised and unable to work, you’ll also be compensated in the Wages and Levy that you pay at $30 per day, up to a maximum of 30 days.

Personal accident coverage when your maid gets into an accident

Personal accident cover is paid to the maid should she suffer from disabilities and impairments because of an accident while she’s working for you, and they’ll get $60,000 per year in personal accident coverage.

Security bond deposit coverage if your maid runs away from home

A security bond is a compulsory payment of up to $5,000 to the government as a pledge of your liability for your helper. This means that you park the sum with the government to assure them that you’re accountible for your maid – including her Work Permit, paying her wages, and ensuring that she gets home.

The money will be returned to you upon completion of the maid’s employment and you making sure that she gets home. In the event that your maid runs away or violates a rule, you’re also liable to make the reports.

With maid insurance, the insurer takes care of the security bond so you do not have to commit the sum to the government. However, the conditions for a full discharge of your helper still applies.

Third-party liability if your maid accidentally causes harm to others

Should your maid accidentally injures or causes the death of someone else, the third-party liability coverage will pay for the legal costs to represent your maid, as well as any damages made against her. Do note that the cover is only up to the insured limits, which varies across plans.

As you probably can tell by now, when you employ a maid, you’re responsibile for her. Hence, with all the possibilities of accidents, it’s important to insure yourself with adequate maid insurance coverage.

Situations when maid insurance will come in handy

Yes, a domestic helper can lighten your workload at home. However, she is also human and accidents and illness can befall upon her. That’s why you want to protect yourself against the unexpected costs of such incidents.

Also, if something happens to your maid and she’s unable to work, you’ll want to be fairly compensated in the levy and wages that you’re still paying for. If she has to return home and you’ve to get a replacement maid, there will also be extra costs, which can be waived off by a maid insurance plan under the ‘Rehiring Expenses’ cover.

So the next time your agency offers to help you settle the compulsory maid insurance, look out for the above coverage to see if you are getting adequate insurance cover for your helper and for yourself.
