How to cancel your credit card

Everything you need to know to close your credit card account, including what phone numbers call for different providers.

While you can cancel a credit card at any time, there are a few important details to check before you can settle the account and cut up the card in your wallet. Here are the contact details for different providers, the steps you need to take to properly cancel a credit card and some things you should consider before closing your account

How to cancel your credit card in 7 steps

Follow these steps to cancel your credit card successfully:

  1. Pay or transfer the outstanding balance. Your card needs to have a $0 balance before you can cancel it.
  2. Transfer or redeem your rewards points. Transfer your rewards points to another program or redeem them so you don’t miss out on any remaining value from the card.
  3. Cancel any direct credit transfers. Cancel all existing direct credit transfers linked to your credit card to minimise any payment disruption.
  4. Contact your provider and cancel your card. Call your card provider’s customer service department and tell them to close your account. Some card providers will do this over the phone, while others might require that you send a written request. Make a record of the date, time, and name of the representative you speak with if you cancel over the phone. If you must cancel in writing, include your credit card number and account number in the letter and state your request for the card provider to close the account.
  5. Check for future statements. Log into your account or go through your credit card statements following your request to make sure that the card has been cancelled.
  6. Destroy your credit card. Cut the card into tiny pieces to make it impossible for anyone to piece it back together.
  7. Wait for confirmation. Your credit card provider should provide confirmation that your credit card account has been closed. If you haven’t received any notice of the account closure within 1–2 weeks, follow up with your provider.

What number do I call to cancel my credit card?

The phone number on the back of your credit card is usually a good bet, but here are details for contacting the major card companies to cancel your card:

What else should I consider when cancelling my credit card?

If you’re planning to close your credit card account, make sure you also consider the following factors before you take action.

  • Close just one account at a time. Whether if you need to close one account or several, always cancel them one at a time, starting with the cards that charge you fees. It is recommended to cancel the newer cards before old ones. You may also want to consider keeping cards that offer good rewards programs.
  • Watch your credit report. It may take several weeks for changes to be reflected on your credit report, but remember to keep tabs on it to see if the cancellation affected your credit score. If your plan is to cancel one card and apply for a new one, know that applying too many times can have a negative impact on your credit history.
  • Bad credit. Poor creditworthiness is bound to affect your ability to get a credit card in the future. So if you already have a lot of debt, you may want to hold off on cancelling your card while you focus on paying down your debts. As well as giving you immediate access to credit if you need it, this strategy can help improve your chances of approval for a new card down the track.
  • Annual fees. Check when your credit card annual fee will be charged and whether or not this will affect your final payments when you plan to close your account.
