FWD car insurance review Singapore (2020)

FWD car insurance is one of the leading car insurance providers in Singapore thanks to their comprehensive plans and relatively affordable premiums. Comprehensive plans under FWD also have this cool feature: Lifetime NCD.

But are FWD auto insurance plans really any good? Let’s find out.

FWD car insurance plans overview

The good thing about FWD car insurance is that all plans cover driving in West Malaysia and parts of Thailand, 24-hour roadside assistance and legal liability cover if you accidentally hurt someone or damage their property.

FWD Third-Party Only and Third-Party, Fire Theft Plans

The Third Party Only plan (TPO) offers basic coverage for all appointed drivers, covering third party damage, meaning if you are legally responsible for someone’s injury or death, or if you damaged someone’s property, as a result of your car.

Third Party, Fire & Theft (TPFT) provides the basic coverage that TPO does, plus coverage for damage to your own car due to theft and fire. It also provides a new car replacement for cars under 12 years old. It also offers reimbursement for towing charges, up to $300.

The two Third-Party plans are primarily meant to protect you against claims from another person. For higher comprehensive coverage, you can select from 3 comprehensive plans: Classic, Executive, and Prestige.

FWD Comprehensive Classic vs Executive vs Prestige

Passenger death/TPD benefit$10,000.00$20,000.00$25,000.00
Replacement of lost or damaged keysNo$500.00$1,000
Personal belongings damaged in an accidentNo$1,000.00$2,000

All comprehensive plans have the coveted Lifetime NCD guarantee at NCD50 — a common abbreviation for “No Claim Discount 50$”. We’ll go into what it is in the next section.

All plans also allow you to extend the workmanship guarantee of your car if you repair at FWD’s premium workshops until your car turns 10, and also offer legal liability cover if you hurt someone or damage someone else’s property. Additionally, windscreen repair or replacement is covered ($100 excess).

The real differences between each of the plans are the compensation amounts, as detailed in the table above. The Classic plan does not offer a courtesy car when your car is under repair, while Executive and Prestige do. There’s also no replacement of lost or damaged keys, or coverage for personal belongings in the Classic Plan, unlike the other two higher tier plans.

Lifetime NCD for comprehensive FWD auto insurance

FWD is the only insurer in Singapore that offers lifetime NCD. When your no-claim discount hits 50%, you get unlimited NCD no matter how many claims you make. This is provided that you purchase a comprehensive car insurance plan.

FWD car insurance add-ons

FWD also has a few add-ons to extend your coverage, such as:

  • Your Preferred Workshop: Add on if you want to repair your car at a non-authorised workshop

  • NCD Protector: You worked hard for 3-4 years to earn significant NCD and you don’t want to risk it with one accident. You can add on if you want to protect your no-claim discount of 30% or 40%

  • Overseas Booster: While all plans cover driving in West Malaysia and parts of Thailand, what you really will appreciate when getting into a car accident in these places is to have emergency assistance. This add-on ensures that you and your family, as well as your car, can get back to Singapore safely.

FWD car insurance’s coverage for floods

As some parts of Singapore do experience ponding or straight out flooding when heavy rains occur, you may be wondering if FWD car insurance covers for floods (especially when coming to the end of the year!).

Since third-party only plans cover hurt and damage to others’ property caused by your car, these plans do not cover for floods. But comprehensive plans do.

FWD commercial car insurance for Grab drivers

FWD also offers commercial car insurance to private-hire drivers, like Grab drivers. It basically has similar benefits to a comprehensive plan but with an important addition for those who make a living on the roads: income protection.

  • Income protection for partial loss: $100 per day for up to 5 days

  • Income protection for total loss: $100 per day for up to 30 days

There is death/permanent disability coverage coverage for medical expenses in case a car accident is $500 per injured person.

Should you choose FWD car insurance?

FWD’s car insurance premiums are as not dirt cheap as a la carte plans, but the comprehensive plans offer value for money.

You get high levels of coverage bundled into the premiums, so it is easy to buy and understand. We love it that the language on FWD’s website is crystal clear with no ambiguity too!
