How do petrol credit cards work?

A petrol credit card works similarly to a conventional credit card, allowing cardholders to earn rewards and/or rebates when they put their petrol expenses on the card.

Credit cards that offer petrol discounts are often tied to a type of rewards programme, such as cashback, air miles or reward points. So on top of earning those rewards on eligible spending, you get to enjoy an instant discount with the specified petrol brand partner of the card.

6 factors to consider when choosing the best petrol credit card for you

Petrol credit cards can provide discounts and savings just by purchasing petrol. How much savings you get to enjoy really depends on your lifestyle and spending habits. Since there are a number of features that are common for petrol credit cards, let’s take a look at some factors in which you might want to consider when making comparisons:

  • Which petrol brand do you visit most often? Most credit cards partner up with one or two petrol brands in which you can get a maximum discount from, so if you have a specific brand of petrol you use, you might want to take this into consideration. For example, you may decide the best credit card for Esso petrol is the DBS Esso Card, as it offers up to 21.2% on fuel savings. But if there’s no Esso garage close to where you live or work, you may prefer the UOB One Card. It offers a potential saving of 24% at SPC, and also gives a competitive rate for Shell (up to 20.8%).
  • What are the direct discounts offered? Petrol card’s discounts scheme can be pretty confusing for some, since most banks publish the maximum discounts you get to enjoy but it is often less straightforward as we think. For example, when a bank says Card A gives you a maximum of 20% discount when you fill up your tank at Caltex stations, it may include a 15% instant discount which is made up of 10% Caltex membership discount + 5% Card A discount, and an additional 5% rebate you earn on your card with a minimum S$50 spent. So, you may want to choose a card based on the absolute amount of direct discount you get without having to fulfil all the conditions.
  • Is there an additional rewards programme to take advantage of? As mentioned, most petrol credit cards are tied to other rewards programmes, allowing you to enjoy the petrol savings and still earn rebates, reward points or air miles. You need to take a look at your lifestyle and spending habit to decide which type of rewards programme will help you get the most out of your monthly spend. • Do you have any existing credit card debt?
This is the most important question to ask yourself before signing up for a new credit card. If you’re currently struggling to clear your existing credit card debt, or you’re only managing to pay the minimum amount due, you may want to consider a balance transfer credit card with a 0% interest promotional period, which you can use to consolidate and transfer your outstanding balances to. This way, you can save on your interest costs and pay off your debt faster.
  • Have you considered the card’s fees and interest rates?
Interest rates are one of the most important components of a credit card and you should always go for one with a lower rate if you intend to carry a balance. Other fees such as late payment penalties and annual fees also affect the cost of owning a card.
  • How often do you drive?
A key reason to shop around for the best petrol credit card is if you actually use your vehicle on a regular basis. If you tend to take public transport to work and only use your car on weekends, then perhaps a different reward credit card may work better for you. A petrol credit card only comes in handy if you refuel regularly. Otherwise, your dollar is better spent on another card to accumulate miles or reward points. What are the pros and cons of a fuel rewards credit cards?

Pros

  • Discounts. Any instant discounts on your fuel spend is already money saved, so an opportunity to receive rewards for necessary costs is always a plus.
  • Reduces the cost of running a car. It’s fair to say that driving is seriously expensive in Singapore. Filling up the tank isn’t cheap either, and so you’ll want to make the most of any chance to save.
  • Supplementary cardholders earn rewards. You can often add a cardholder to your account, doubling the amount of points you could earn.
  • Extra benefits. Like any other regular credit cards, petrol cards often come with additional features such as a frequent flyer rewards programme, complimentary insurance or cash rebates that could provide you with other benefits.

Cons

  • Petrol Brand membership is required. The maximum amount of fuel savings you get with your credit card is often tied to the use of the petrol brand’s loyalty programme. This could mean you need to subscribe to their card and pay a membership fee. You will also need to have the card with you when you fill up your tank in order to enjoy the maximum discount.
  • Restrictions. Most petrol credit card providers are partnered with a particular fuel brand. While you may still get petrol discounts with other brands, the percentage you get is significantly lower. Make sure the card is partnered with the petrol station you go to regularly.
  • Reward card competition. With such a wide range of rewards cards available, the petrol rewards card may not offer as much value compared with the competition. Consider how much you spend on petrol and where you want to see your rewards go.

Bottom line

A petrol credit card can offer you rewards through your weekly fuel expenses. These cards may offer a savings solution for customers who are continually on the road and frequently visit the fuel pump. How can you find the best petrol credit card for you? That will depend on how often you use your credit card for fuel, and the rewards you could earn. Compare your options to find the right based on your circumstances.
